Remember these? Peavey SP-3?

Maybe I'm just that Grumpy Old Man (or one of them) that has fond memories of the gear of yore and wants to show today's young whippersnappers what things used to be like, but there'e a pair of these available locally for a decent price and I'm strongly considering picking them up, if just for the old-school horn-loaded vibe. I remember them being a club mainstay back in the day, as well as on outdoor stages around town. I can only imagine what they'd sound like in a proper "tri-amp" setup with an active crossover feeding them the mids and highs...

Possibly, but that's something I'm prepared to do with 35 year old cabs.

There was a tiny little bar with a tiny little stage in the corner. I kid you not, one went on top of the bass amp, the other got propped on the mantle. Monitors not required.

I picked up a set of the separate ones: the horn cabinet, mid cabinet and mid-bass horn loaded cabinet. Never took them anywhere but my garage. Eventually sold them to a Filipino guy. He said he was shipping them back home for street festivals.

Careful what you wish for. Chances are they won't sound nearly as good as today's unpowered equivalent and will be a lot heavier. Man I lifted a lot of up on poles. I don't miss them. Remember the crossover cans for the Peavey power amps.

me either...but mostly because they sounded like ! lots of folks used them (cheap) but they didn't sound good at all. i could get past the weight and the form factor if they sounded good.

Hold out for a couple of Altec Lansing "Voice of the Theater". Lighter, and they sound better.

I've still got FOUR bi-amped SP2's in my garage. Loaded with BW-15's and 1" Selenium horns. Kept the internal xover's if I ever sell them.
They STILL sound real good.

I gigged em in the 80's, 90's. Ran everything thru them never had an issue. Sold them due to weight!!

I remember gigging with the old Peavey Project One system, CS-400 & 800’s with the octa-can x-overs, and the Mark III console. Those were the days. Now it’s powered QSC boxes, in ear monitors, and an iPad. Man things are better today.

I have a pair of THESE somewhere in my warehouse. They will never be moved again. I think they were 110 pounds each?

I had a pair of Clair S4's but scavenged the drivers and drove them to the dump. 200 pounds each.

so they would pay you like $50 to haul them away? that's about the only "decent" offer i would consider.

My first real band ran those Peavey tops with 4-18 bottom cabs!!!!! It was a huge wall of mud!

Had a set of those, once I heard them I sold them to a Karoke Guy hahahah
Then went and bought another set of SP3's on these were the G model.
Much better, still use them today.

Almost always had SP2s or SP3s in the 80s. At one point, got some SP1s - those were freaking monsters.

I have zero fondness for old heavy PA gear.
