Double Bass Remic Green and Grace Rex Preamp

I’ve been pretty happy with my Ischell for a good while and could make it work pretty easily with my equipment or sitting in on someone’s amp so haven’t been looking for anything different.

Then of all things the stupid putty just became unusable and I was afraid to use it for fear that it would lose seal and I might get a nasty squeal. Never happened on the band stand but I was sure it was a matter of time.

Not finding ANYTHING in the US to order other than something on Etsy that I didn’t have a lot of confidence in, I decided to take a flier on a used Remic Green here with a backup plan of a Realist Soundclip if it didn’t work out…..haven’t used a piezo in 20 years but lots of local players use it and I figured I could make it work.

It came right before not the most ideal gig to try it out….quartet gig with Bobby Falk on some songs he generally uses an EB player on. I went into my little Mackie 4 channel mixer into my QSC k10. Sound was good, didn’t feel like I got enough volume but the band seemed to dig it and friends listening said they could hear me well, so not sure if I just wasn’t in a good position to hear.

Since I never blend anything I just couldn’t see myself springing for a Felix, but I was intrigued by the Rex mic preamp pedal. Messing with it last 2 days I think this could work really well, although proof will be on the actual bandstand. Interestingly enough, I seem to get the best combo of volume and good tone not through my QSC but going into my Markbass CMD121p using the 1/4” out of the Rex into the 1/4” in of the MB, which makes me think I could use the Remic easily into other people’s amps.

Tomorrow will be my maiden voyage so to speak, in a situation that I THINK will be tailor made for this. Big band….I usually have the soundman use the direct out on my Markbass, but with the Rex I will send the 1/4” to the amp and the sound guy can use the Direct out on the Rex. Should be pretty easy to get the sound in the house and monitors that way. I always have my Heil and mic mount in my bag if need be.

Ischell gracefully is getting me some replacement putty after I covered the shipping I know I can make that work, but so far the sound on the Remic is a notch better if I can get enough usable volume.

It’s a very complex life we lead as Double Bassist. I’ve used the Remic Green into a Markbass Little Mark and a 4x10 passing through my Grace Felix it worked quite well. The Remic Green through a well EQ ed House System. Is a very clean articulate microphone. Understand that it is a Omni Directional mic with a tighter pickup pattern, it is not a cardioid, super cardioid or hyper cardioid. \It cannot reject/suppress feedback like those other microphones do.

I liked my Remic a lot but got too much bleed. I replaced it with the Neumann MCM 114 and am very happy with it. Equally rich sound, much less bleed, and I can get much louder before feedback. I blend a lifeline with the mic. (65% mic/35% pickup. The boost in my Felix is set to the pickup only)

The Remic is great though, I just sometimes need to get louder with certain drummers who I choose to play with because of their styles; which includes the volume at which they play. I do however prefer the fact that my MCM stays on the bass.

If I had my druthers though, I’d love for someone to figure out a double mic that combines a ribbon and a large diaphragm condenser together. My favorite sound is an RCA R44 or 77-DX and a Neumann U47, though I do like an SDC like a Schoeps CMC 6 with MK4 or Norman KM84 but I digress.

Hey Ric now that I have a Felix and also using a Markbass care to share any info on this?

Anyone using the Remic green with the Grace Designs Felix and care to share their settings for Channel 1?

On mics I am used to putting the gain right to where it starts to clip. With the Remic unless I cut that by like 50% I get feedback starting with almost no volume. Not sure if anyone figured out how to notch some of that out.

I borrowed one to see if it was just mine that was recently repaired and it's not. It's doing the same exact thing.

At this point at least blending it's not nearly as useful as my Heil PR40.

Appreciate any help you can give.

The clipping might start before the indicator shows visible light. There might be a current flowing through the LED, but not enough to recognize any light. Soft clipping might hardly be audible but can feed the feedback loop.
Try to turn back the gain a certain amount after you leveled it using the indicator.
But radiation of the cab feeding the top or back can also easily lead to early feedback.

Yeah, I am standing off the side for my test so it should not be getting any vibration or much of one

My friend actually end up fixing my Remic Green and I’m getting better signal than the one I was borrowing

Not sure if it’s the cause or not but on mine, I compressed the styro from a little tighter to get it to sit better on the top. I didn’t want to do that with somebody else’s

Going to try using it on the gig tonight blended with the realist lifeline. The Drummer is a pretty good sound guy so I may have him play with the EQ and try to dial out a little bit of ring. I heard, but couldn’t isolate while playing.

Posted on another thread but I was ready to give up on the Remic and decided this morning to try mounting under the bridge using another piece of foam to make it tall enough and WOW what a difference in usable output.
