Renaissance/Turner Basses Club

[raises hand, sheepishly] Yeah... I done it.

It was too good of a deal to pass up. A Model One bass has been on my bucket-list for years. Since this crazy virus thing happened, I've been working basically seven days a week... 10-12, sometimes 16 hours at a shot. (Water Treatment Plants are the definition of essential service, we pretty much got shanghai'ed for the first round or two) And well... what the ham-sandwich...?! Eventually I might even get to play the frazzlin' thing out somewhere. :laugh:

I'll have a review up here in week or so. :thumbsup:

I'm so thrilled that this one is going to you!!! I've been following it and have been completely tempted, but a Model One will still sit near the top of my bucket list. Huge congratulations and I'm very much looking forward to your review!!! Awesome!

Eons ago I had a Renaissance 4 - nice instrument, but wasn't for me. Currently, I have a custom fretless Rob Allen Deep 4 with a similar config (mag + piezo, discrete outputs for each). I mainly play jazz with it including a couple of big bands pre-COVID. Currently I'm using a Henriksen Bud. One of the reasons I got it is that it has two inputs, so I can run both pickups separately without any weird cable switching, etc.

I can say it's not easy finding amps that
1. Have two inputs each, with their own volume and EQ adjustments
2. Are small and light (sub 20-lbs in total)
3. Have good sound
4. Won't break the bank

I used some of the Phil Jones Bass stuff and it's also pretty good. Worth a listen with something like a Ren.

FenderP, sounds like a Walter Woods amp would be perfect for what you described although a little pricey. Maybe check out the Acoustic Image Clarous Amps, they have two channels with separate eq and outputs, light weight, and are reasonably priced.

my custom Ren has separate outputs for the piezo and mag, as well as 2 v/t's. REALLY useful. AFA amps, i am using an older Raven dual input stereo output preamp, usually straight to FOH, or if doing my usual "Art Music"
gigs, which a lot of times have no PA, into a simple bass amp that I use for paying gigs.

Remind me/us, John... yours is a 'Deuce' model Renaissance, correct? I'd been wondering how that setup worked.

yep..having played some Rens in the early 2000's and late 90's, i figured out what I wanted in a custom, and rick was like why not? so each pu has it's own mini system (the way i look at it). I sometimes don't even plug in the mag pu. One thing i have learned over the last 12 years of owning it is that the bass BY ITSELF is complete, no need for anything besides the very slight tone shaping the Raven pre provides. This as opposed to my other "bass" a weirdly tuned (and sometimes not tuned) mikro that is buried in efx to the point of not knowing what it is, and I like that a lot too, as well as my cheap synths from the land that time forgot.

when I play the ren though, even if I use it to play free improv, it is in a pretty traditional tuning (e-c) and at a low volume. IOW, I become a "bass player" again.

btw Ed...last week i had a good article about the dullest bass player I know, in a fairly new thing called "Know Your Bass Player" which has some really innerestin things about a lot of the great ones. I was going to put a link here, and Rick put it on the Ren site. i dont know the general TB policy of pimping your own bad self, but is it ok to post it here? asking for a friend.

[sigh] UPS, bless their hearts, and the rest of their vital organs...

So the inbound Model One is a siggy-req'd package, natch. Due today. I got one of them days where 25 hours ain't enough time for the freakin' world to make a spin, and me get everything in I need to do. At a Water Treatment Plant, the end of one month and the beginning of another equals a MOUNTAIN of data entry, paperwork, log rotation, you-name-it, and it needed to get done today. So I tried to login to my UPS account and 'reschedule delivery'. Nah. Ain't happenin'. Can't make it work. COVID-19 is to blame, flummoxed the whole thing, I'm sure. So I just called on the phone... to my amazement, I got a real-live person, nice dude, seemed to have a good grip on why this is kinda' inconvenient. So good ol' Troy at UPS Headquarters took my tracking number, verified my name and address, and set my delivery to be "Held At Facility". UPS has a very nice terminal right out near the Airport in Roanoke... I pass within 2 miles of it twice, every single day of my life. This is easy, or one would think. This morning I started extra early on my way. By 6 am I'm at my desk, papers rustling, practically taking coffee intravenously. About 7 am, I hit a good stopping point ,grab my phone and hit the tracking page. (y'all already guessed how this went, right... right?!) Yeah. They put my package on the brown truck and sent it "Out For Delivery" anyway.

So, I went like dad-gummit all day to beat that brown truck to my house. Blew off everything I possibly could until tomorrow. Which means I'll have two loaded up days.

Meanwhile, the wait is on. And I'm thinkin' to myself... if that guy's name was really Troy, my ass is a jukebox. :laugh:
