Replacement nut for a G&L L2000 Tribute

Hi

I need to replace the nut on my G&L L2000 tribute. The thing is, that when i lower the strings on the saddle (that gives me a good action) the strings buzz when i play them loose (dont know a better term in english). I tried to put a paper fragment under the strings, and that helped. So my conclusion is that i need to replace the nut.
I would really like to get a Warwick "Just A Nut", but i cant find one in the right dimensions (43*3,5 mm).

I tried to find a nut on G&L's homepage, but it doesn't seem that I can get one there.

My next thought is that the dimensios are identical with a Fender P-bass (i havent checked it out), so maybe I could use a ut for a P-bass

Does anybody know if it is possible to:
1) Get a "Just A Nut" with the dimensions i need?
2) Where to buy an L2000 Tribute nut?
3)If it is possible to use other nuts (e.g. Fender P-Bass)?

It's hard to answer your question without seeing the instrument.

When you're trying for the lowest possible action, it all comes down to geometry.

When you slip a piece of paper between the nut and the string, you raise it. Of course, the same thing happens when you raise the saddles, too.

Some questions, to help you diagnose what's going on:
1. Are the frets worn enough to show visible grooves?
2. Does the buzz only happen when you pluck the open string, or does it happen with fretted notes as well?
3. Is the buzzing most prominent at the bottom, middle, or top of the fingerboard?

If the frets are worn, don't even bother trying to deal with action height, as everything will change after you have the frets levelled, anyway.

When you're testing this out, try to play very gently (so gently that you only just barely trigger the buzzing), so that you can hear better where it's coming from.

If the buzz only happens on the open string, then the nut is too low.

If it happens with fretted notes, then you have either lowered the action too far, or you have problems elsewhere. Problems elsewhere could involve the amount of relief (the natural curve in the neck, controlled by the trussrod), an uneven fingerboard, or high frets.

As far as getting a replacement nut goes, pre-slotted nuts are never a perfect fit anyway.

Take the bass to a tech, and have a replacement nut fitted, preferably bone. A good tech will take a blank and shape it to be a perfect fit for your instrument, instead of simply slapping on a molded replacement.

Thanks for replying. I will come back with answers to your diagnostic questions later.
