I'm considering buying some new pickups to give my bass some new life. I'm wondering how difficult it is to replace pickups, if there's soldering required, and if a total know-nothing like myself could do it. Thanks in advance.

Changing PUP's is not hard to do. I'd do a little research of a bit more technical nature if I were you, just to get a better feel of what you are getting into.
Soldering is as easy as falling off a log, but there is a right way to do it. Again, find an online soldering resource, or buy one of those "For Dummies" books.

Hey, we were all "total know-nothings" when we started. Pickup swapping is fairly simple for passive basses, a little trickier on actives. I suggest buying a book on the subject, like Guitar Electronics For Musicians by Donald Brosnac. It is a bit dated but is still a good reference for passive instruments. Also check out Stewart MacDonald's website for diagrams:
