Replying to a classified ad?

How do I do this now? I only see a note saying that I do not have sufficient privileges to reply. How do I reply to someone else's ad?

I understand the viewpoint that replies in a classified ad can provide valuable info. Can we call on our ad posters, to simply edit their ads and add useful information? Quotes from private conversations, extra pics, etc can be added to the OP indefinitely (no time limit on editing). Just a thought.

I hope sellers update their ads with questions and answers--I'm sure some will and some won't. Regardless, I will miss the invaluable source of info that came from discussions about weird old basses for sale, cool new basses for sale, and everything in between. Very often the peanut gallery or an old owner would chime in with info the seller didn't even know. Overall, good site redesign, but classifieds comments will be sorely missed...

Absolutely, positively, DO NOT LIKE the the changes in the classifieds, and from the looks of things, I don't seem to be alone in this opinion!

Not happy at all about not being able to reply to FS ads. I loved reading through conversations about different basses that were for sale and is one of the main reasons I supported TB.

Reminds me of the management at a place I worked. Dress code was 'casual business' but some sourpuss complained that one girl was showing too much cleavage. So instead of asking her to not do that, they knee-jerked and made everybody start wearing uniforms so now everybody wears the exact same thing. Never said one word to the one person who unkowingly caused it, they just punished everybody.

IMO, that makes the classifieds here much more like eBay ... and the fact that the classifieds here were unlike eBay is a large part of their value.

Yup. Won't be long until they realize how stupid this is. This is not a limitation of the software.

That's simply not the point. The discussion that occurs in the classified threads is invaluable. Without it, I could simply go with searching eBay, Reverb.com, Craig's List, etc. I WANT to see the input of TB members in classified THREADS, otherwise I really won't bother to look there.

Thanks for listening Paul. I'm sure that this is a huge undertaking, but based on the hour or so that I've spent on the new site, this is the biggest issue I am seeing discussion about.

In addition, please address the fact that the system is only allowing us to reply to one ad per 24 hours...I have multiple ads as do others and we would like to have the ability to reply to each, once a day.

Or do we need to create one master ad with all our stuff....Only problem there is they would get too confusing, IMO

Absolutely want to be able to reply to multiples.

Absolutely DO NOT want to create "master ads"....that would be a major step backwards.

I posted this in another thread about this topic earlier today, but think I should post it here too:
"I'm in the same opinion pool as those above. I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge and insight into gear, whether I was buying it or not, from all the posts that are questioned and answered in the "for sale" threads. If its up to the seller to essentially control the complete content on the "for sale thread" then I can see an avenue for potential fraudulent or dishonest postings too. The open and public communication process is one of the main things that have kept the transactions honest here on TB I think. If this is indeed the way the classifieds will work from now on, I'm going to be hard pressed to buy and sell gear here anymore, and perhaps more importantly to those who run this site, I doubt I'll continue with a contributing membership.
This issue needs to be addressed ASAP."

A large part of how I enjoy Talkbass comes from looking through the classifieds. Even if I don't want to buy a particular thing I might still click on it just to "ooh" and "ahh". That's half of it; the other half of my enjoyment comes when I scroll down and read through all the back and forth comments on that classified thread. I might learn something interesting; I might laugh, I might scream, I might whatever but the point is that there is a lot of value and enjoyment for me digging around and reading the classifieds. If the classifieds can't be replied to then that distills them down to the nuts-n-bolts facts that the seller personally feels they need to sell their item. It also shields the seller from acting responsibly if they don't want to. Ex: Someone puts a bass up. Someone else used to own that bass and knows that the truss rod has issues. Under the old system the former user posts "hey did you get the truss rod fixed or is it still wonky?" and thus all potential buyers become better informed. Under the new system if the buyer doesn't want to mention the truss rod issue for whatever reason... well.. they don't have to because nobody will post on their thread. The ugliness and inconvenience of dealing with people who "bump" incorrectly doesn't really hold a candle to what is gained by freely allowing posting in the classifieds.

btw folks here is how to bump (in my opinion).

Bump and then immediately delete your prior bump

there see, that's not hard. If everyone just did that this wouldn't be such a pain in the ass for the mods to deal with and we could go back to normal.

Again, trying to bump two of my threads for my EB for sale and my Tony Franklin for sale.

Both have been 24 hours and yet it is telling me TO WAIT 20 hours to bump A THREAD, because I bumped a truss rod cover earlier and even removed it, so to try to bump my threads.....

DID NOT WORK.

I am awaiting a reply as to why we can't bump all our threads ONCE EACH, EVERY 24 HOURS....

Paul, alot of folks just simply wont like change no matter what you do and while Im not crazy about alot of the changes, I can deal. Its just the internet, and I can find ways to understand and use the new system here. The issue with the classifieds however is a big deal. I primarily use talkbass via an older model phone and multiple cut and pastes are troublesome. Making the OP of a classified having to constantly do cumbersome actions to update thread info from multiple sources will simply become prohibitive. Moreover, the questions and facts added by members is a great insurance policy for honesty with so many knowledgeable eyes on board. I know i have helpled other members sell items by my added comments, and I know Ive had items sell because of others added comments. Without these the TB classifieds become barely more than craigslist, and less trustworthy. Also their have been numerous members over the years that I never dealt with who I decided to trust their 'cred' due to the vouching of other members whose opinions I respect. The ease and trustworthiness of the classifieds is the whole of the reason of my supporting membership. Im not threatening to cancel it or not renew, as I will most likely still want to use this wonderful resource, BUT I would probably start to feel the same way I do about my internet bill to Comcast. Ill pay it if I have to, but I wont like it and would not recommend it.

as for the "bumping problem", is there a reason why the site cant just do what it has always done with posts in general? Its always been that the site only allows one post in a 30 second period. If I ever tried to post in a thread or in two threads within 30 seconds of each other I got a message saying i couldnt. Couldnt the software just carry over to "time" an OP to only being allowed to post an additional post in a classified once every 24hours but still allow them to edit and give responses to questions? seems like a good compromise.. (that said, I clearly have NO IDEA how much it costs to pay for competent code monkeys to do this strange magic, and its your dime! )

Adding my support to the 'bring back replies in the classifieds'. I don't buy/sell very often, but classifieds is one of my most visited forums, as I enjoy seeing what's out there and what others think. Once the discussions are gone, the forum is dead.
