Restoring 2x15

It looks like your grill cloth is very similar to the vintage Ampeg Blue/Silver cloth (Pic of a seemingly original Kasino setup like you have here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]), and that is nowhere to be found at the moment. With Ampeg's parent Loud selling to Yamaha, they have not had stock since January.

If you are not wedded to that color scheme, you can use any grill cloth you'd like, and mojotone is a very good place to look.

Good luck; it's a good looking (and hopefully good sounding when you are done) rig!

I think there's a gap between what appears to be a brace that was added and the original cross-piece.

And my honest opinion about the speakers is you'll be fine with the Betas, just don't tell those of the more scientific ilk you're doing it.

I see what you're saying and yeah... I don't need science to tell me what sounds good. I use my ears for that. :D

You've got to figure though, that drivers are expensive, and grill cloth is expensive for what it is, and grill cloth is a serious PITA to fit really well, and if budget is an issue and hassle is an issue you may well be better off checking out the local second hand market.

If on the other hand you want to keep the looks of that neat pair then fine... Fitting cloth is a PITA the first two times you do it in my experience. Lots of places on line claiming to show you. My biggest bit of advice, having done it on two cabs with mediocre (1st) and p***-poor (2nd) results is to make sure your cloth is big enough to use all the clever tips to get the stuff tight, and not reuse a bit of secondhand cloth that is only just big enough to stretch across the frame at all...

What science is most good for, I suspect, until you're at the expert level, is telling you what's best avoided before rather than after you buy it...

If I had that cab (and I did a retrofit similar to this with an Ampeg 8x10 last year), covert the bottom brace into a shelf port and if the middle brace is solid open it up and use Faital 15PR400. As mentioned, use software to calculate the newly created port and how much shelf you need to get it around 45hz. Regrill it with what you like off ebay or where ever... that is simple. You can add a horn/tweeter with a filter at around 3.5hz if you need the fret sparkle (but is you stretch the griil over the baffle... maybe adding the horn later would be a re-work).

I am looking into 2 Eminence speakers to throw into this beast because 1 is blown and the other rattles or something. There is an ugly looking tear in the grill cloth and I have no idea how to fix this lol. Where do I find replacement grill cloth? I'm considering a black and red woven cloth if I can't find the original style.
Please give me tips on replacing the cloth and possibly how to do it lol thank you all

Hard to tell from the photos, but you might be able to recycle some of the grill cloth if it is 60s vintage Ampeg. Unfortunately the supplies of the vintage Ampeg cloth were recently depleted, so various people are trying to track down swatches.

Maybe @Bugeyed Earl or @beans-on-toast can tell if this is the good stuff, and remember the other TB member who was recently interested in a swatch.

That would have been @Oren Hudson, but he was looking for a piece big enough for an 8x10 cabinet. This fabric does look a lot like the old Ampeg stuff, I'd be interested if @deadinameadow wants to recycle the scrap.

First I need to figure out how to get it off without damaging the cab haha. I think the grill is nailed onto the cab so I'll probably need to cut it off with a razor. Once I have this figured out with the new cloth I'll let let you know how the scrap is. I think it would be salvageable for a smaller cab.
I also thought they must have cut that hole there for recording, but that top speaker is the blown speaker lol

Take just a moment to call the guys at US Speaker. Give them the inside dimensions of the cab and the dimensions of the port. They will give you several options of drivers that work well with those dimensions.... and they are an Eminence dealer anyway. So, if the Betas work, they'll tell you and sell them to you. But if they don't, they'll tell you what will.

That's an expensive gamble to take jist to prove "you don't need no science". ;)

And, honestly, it's just ridiculous, lazy, and dumb not to take advantage of a smart guy with software sitting by the phone waiting for it to ring who likes nothing more than matching up speakers and cabs. :D

It looks like there are screws holding the front baffle on, I think that's how you'd remove it for re-covering it. Interestingly, the construction looks very much like a Sunn amp that I have, it looks very nicely built.

Betas be fine and outperform originals by landslide.

Grill cloth looks similar to marshall black/silver somweave

Amplified parts have few black silver type grill cloths that appear similar

The head is probably a bit low-wattage in the first place given its age, so I imagine that running numbers for anything other than low end roll-off is basically a non-issue (if two modern fifteen inch drivers can't handle 50-75 watts apiece at peaks even in slightly sub-optimal environments, I can't imagine they'd be selling them very long). I honestly imagine you can't go too wrong depending on the tone you want. But either way, doing some quick measurements and figuring out what you need first with some quick math or software running, or calling usspeaker as two fingers mentioned really can only do you some good. If I recall the guys at eminence are pretty open to calls as well.

Heck, I'd have half a mind to cover the port and grab a couple of eminence Alphas, or a similarly cheap driver with 1.5" coil, after looking into the internal volume depending on the wattage of the head. Sure, there are heavier duty drivers and some really efficient Neos with higher power handling - but at some point you're just spending money on either a heavier ceramic driver or a neo driver with power handling that you'll never actually use with a head like that. I mean, if you want a new car, are you going to get a formula 1 racer, or are you going to get something sensible? This is a similar principle, get what you can verify will work, but don't over-build it.

Another potential winner: eminence Deltas. Sure, higher wattage voice coil, and look into the cab and port volume, but it's got good mid-range and high sensitivity, which could make the most of your head's wattage without spending too much money.

Thanks for all the replies! Everyone is offering great advice. I think I'm going to start with the WINISD part. I downloaded the program but I have no idea what I'm doing on it. How do I get my cabs measurements into winisd? What measurements do I need? How do I set the tuning of my port??

Worst case I'm just going to order the Eminence Beta 15 s from Zzounds and return them if they don't sound good. In all reality, I'm mainly going for a really subby kind of sound, not too many highs but a lot of bass. I play in drop A and my biggest problem with any speaker is the resonance of the low A note, I would love to recone the original speakers someday, but at the current performance they won't last long in this tuning, the low A is too low for the speakers I have to register the sound. So every note is loud and clear other than my top string, which is vital in my bands style.

The speakers currently in my cab don't have a lot of information on them. They don't say how high of a wattage they can handle, the only thing they tell me is '8-16 ohms'. Which one is it? Lol, and my amp can only put out 125W I believe

Just call Eminence- they will walk you through what you need, and good chance the beta will be it. A few years back I had some folks on hear telling me that a certain Eminence speaker would be all wrong for the certain cabinet i was going to use it in. Funny thing, that was the one recommended by Eminence. I put more stock in their suggestions than I do the random posts on here.
