Returning bass after changing strings?

Any purchase transaction is a two way street - when it comes to a return, even more so. Whenever someone senses that a seller might have “tried to get away with something”, they will hop on line and make a fuss about it, shaming the seller for not doing things in good faith.

Folks, this goes both ways. If we want sellers to treat us fairly, it’s not helpful if we don’t do the same. Any time you’re thinking “ they won’t notice”, think for a bit - is it OK if the store approaches things that way?

Sweetwater has been through this many times, they understand pretty much every thing that can go wrong, and they’re good at dealing with it. I find if you are completely up front and honest ( just like you want them to be), you’ll get through it just fine. Once in a while, with some sellers, it doesn’t go that way, but that gives you useful data - you know not to deal with them in the future.

Yep, if this was a private sale and they guy wanted to return under the stated conditions, I wouldn't be pleased.

What I find funny is why do people feel the need to post on a thread topic to give them answers on what to do for a decision, can't they just figure it out themselves by contacting the music store and just deal with them on what to do and procedures!!!!

This might be a silly question but I just wanted to see if anyone has any insight. I bought a new bass from Sweetwater, and I'm about to return it for a replacement.

Only thing is, I cut off the original strings and replaced them. I'm not worried about recuperating the cost of the strings, I can eat that cost, but would there potentially be any problems with returning a bass with different strings from the original?

And then, let's say it's a 5 string bass, and when I replaced the strings, I used high C tuning (EADGC). Does that change the situation? I can't put the original strings back on, but is it ok to return it with the EADGC strings even though it originally came with BEADG? Should I put a set of regular 5 strings with a low B on it before I ship it back? Or am I just worrying about nothing?

Answered on the first post, though to be honest, this is why I don't cut strings off. The time saved isn't worth throwing away strings you may end up trying at some point. My thoughts though, nothing wrong with you doing so.

Why cut strings to remove them in the first place?

^^^This^^^ was my first question. If you hadn't cut them, you could have put them back on. You could wait for the new one and use those strings on the return, or you can go out and buy a new set of strings and put it back to the way it is supposed to be.

Still, it's fun to watch just how many people don't actually bother reading through the replies and just repeat the same context-less answer that's already been said 5 other times. Gotta say, I'm a big fan of the posts suggesting that switching out the strings for different gauges is a gross alteration to the instrument, or that it's somehow analogous to ripping out the frets. Looking forward to seeing more variations of "cutting strings bad" and "buy more strings" even though both of those points have been addressed by this point. Keep it up!

Lots of them. Like 62 packs of them, and put them in the box when you return the bass, as an apology to the almighty Sweetwater.
If you don't do this I'm pretty sure you'll be playing and BAM! a string snaps and hits you right in the eyball. That's how Sweetwater rolls.

Sounds like a dying battery to me - I assume you've done the obvious and tried a fresh one?

Absolutely! Definitely considered that.

This specific bass actually bypasses whatever active circuitry when it's in passive mode, so the issue still occurs even when I take the battery out! Very strange.

The paranoid (and naive) part of me didn't want to mention ANYTHING about changing the strings to Sweetwater just in case that somehow made it impossible to return. But it would be kinda crappy to return an instrument with completely different string gauges and not mention it at all...

If you return the bass with E-C and do not inform, they may tune it back to B-G and set the relief accordingly. This has occurred to me when I had fretwork done to my bass. Luthier called me because the truss road was already minimized and still has a back bow. I was using La Bella tapes where the C was 40 and he assumed they B-G strings. The same thing can happen if the OP decides not to inform. It is only $24 for a 5 string Ernie Ball at GC right now.

Yes you can put any brand tire in a car, but try putting a different size and then claim suspension warranty or a run-flat set when it did not come with one or vice versa.

Honestly really good call out. I need to turn off those pesky notifications because my easily-distractable brain can't resist clicking when I see an alert.

I really do like a lot of the answers. Well, not so much the ones accusing me of things like being cheap when I said it's not about the cost in my original post, but you know.

A lot of my replies here are definitely defensive and/or full of myself, and I really have no right to be when I'm asking a question like this.

I genuinely appreciate everyone's contributions to this thread. It's given me things to think about, mistakes to learn from, and just generally a interesting variety of experiences and opinions to draw from. That's what makes forums great!

MF has a set of 5 strings for $11.99

I'd buy those, put them on the bass and keep the ones you replaced on the bass. Most likely they're better quality and you can use them for your next bass.

Also, wouldn't hurt to call SW and explain the situation. Shouldn't be a big deal IMO.

Yamaha TRBX 605

A great, lightweight bass. If you scour through TB, you'll find others who had problems with the electronics in the TRBX 50x/60x line, so I'm hoping the replacement is good to go. Unfortunate about the qc issues because it's otherwise such a great bass for the price.
