reverb for bass?

whenever i intend on channeling the almighty god of surf guitar (Dick Dale) or The Thirteenth Floor Elevators i use it a lot. its really cool if you want your part to kind of float around in a mix without ever really getting in your face

It only translates live in FOH when the PA support is top notch and the venue is big enough for the stage to not blend with that mix.

Scooped tone works great with reverb and unless it's only wet up top a huge fat old school low end can be a bad idea with live reverb bass.

I sometime run stereo 410s and use chorus and reverb when I want a big soundscape...In one of my bands..a 3 pc instrumental...The guitarist also runs stereo and the sound of both is HUGE! The crowds go nuts when do a big orchestral flourish (sustained notes and chords along harmonic stuff IMO sounds awsome with some wetness!)

if you're a mars volta fan,
in Frances the Mute, i think on the track Cassandra Gemini, the bass player is doing this cool thing with verb and a fretless, gives the bass an eerie ghost-like tone.

And of what you can hear on Metallica's Ride the Lightning, I would take a stab at reverb being a part of Cliff's tone

Reverb can make the bass really boomy.

Too much low end makes the bass boomy...roll some off B4 it hits the verb...or at the amp...It depends on what you are trying to do!

This is NOT directed to you Ric5...I just wanted to add...
All FX have a purpose....If you are using them wrong thay will sound wrong UNLESS the resulting sound is what you are going for....SEE DOUG WIMBISH...the idea is to use them creatively....chicken is chicken.. its how YOU cook it that will determine if others will like how it tastes...no-one suggested he use it for everything ...he just asked when and how....I pointed him to a to a clip that you can hear reverb used in a live setting. Others pointed him to other example and other genres of music.

i used to use it all the time both live and in the studio. of course, i came of age as a musician in the 80's where everything was just drenched in reverb. gradually i got sick of it, though. washed it out too much. now i don't think i'll ever use it again on bass, and very sparingly on everything else.
