reverend P pickups -- $18!

dimarzio made two sets, one which had two neck pickups. when one of the pickup covers came off after a couple years, i sent them back to dimarzio under warranty (5 years!) and asked for two neck pickups to be sent back. i was able to put a mint green pickguard on it (black j with rosewood board), and i defretted it and sold it to a TB'er. the fretlines were done by the guitar engineer at peavey. it was pretty cool bass, but no longer what i wanted.

IF YOU BUY THE REVEREND PICKUPS....

Instead of "replacing" the preamp, consider ditching it altogether and going with a passive setup. I suggest this for a few reasons:

(1) Reverend basses were always passive and always reputed for their excellent passive tone. The pickups would therefore be specifically designed to be used passive. I will tell you, the one in my bass floors me it sounds so fantastic.
(2) If you've never had a passive bass, try it! You might like it!

Ibanez is famous for skimping on preamps and electronics. Some basses from them have great pickups and electronics, notably the old Musicians and the three-coil musicman copy (what's the name of that ax again?), but those are the exception not the rule.

I have an SX, and I love the passiveness as well, but i just love being able to add an extra thump and whatnot, from what i can tell, electronics are decent (then again, I wouldn't really know.)

I may try passive, but I don't want to really rip anything out...then again, I may give it a shot. I'd have to maybe get new pots (or just learn to wire)...if only I could make it push/pull. Eh, whatever I guess. Still not sure if I should just get one of each (P &J) and throw the P in the neck and decide where to put the J later, in the bridge or in the neck of my SX.

Does anyone happen to know the dimensions of these pick-ups?

I e-mailed Reverend on Friday, but still have not gotten a response. I want to replace my stock pick-ups because these are just so cheap it's a steal! If it's not an improvement, they can be saved for a future project bass.

My P-type pick-up is 3-3/4" long, plus the side ear mounts
My J-style pick-up is 3-5/8" long

Thanks if anyone can help me. If not, I'll be sure to give Reverend's answer to everyone here!

Each "half" of the P pup is 2 1/4, not including the mounts. Can't say on the J pups as my 5 string is up for sale at the local bass store.

I also have to figure out how I'm going to order as well, as they're closed whenever I'm home (weekdays, 9-5 I'm at school....)

email them and explain your situation. Great guys there, I'm sure they can work something out with you.

Doh!

Anyone know if you can throw a Neck PU into a Bridge? I don't see why not, but I know you can't do it the other way around.

FWIW:

the screw towers of a Bridge and neck J are not aligned.

Also there's a lot of variation in manufacturer "J" dimensions. In my Ibe's, P's dropped in no problem but any replacement J was a strong 1/16th long in all 5 basses. There's as much as an 1/8" difference in length in manufacturer J bridge pups, and J neck pups for that matter.

I did not recieve an e-mail since Joe was at NAMM, I suppose. He's the one who e-mailed me ([email protected]). I recieved the e-mail less than fifteen minutes ago, and sent him a reply inquiring about his J pick-up.

Here's the response I got,

"Our P's are 2-1/4" long x 1-1/16" wide (each individual half).

We only have the NECK position J. Is that what you want?

Thanks,

The P pick-up is a match. Now, about the J...

FWIW:

like I said before, the problem will be in the tower placement not in the length. You already know a 3 1/2" long pup will fit into a 3 5/8" long route, less some freak variation in width which I haven't ran across. At best he'll give you lxwxh and that's not going to tell you where the towers are. Ideally, what you need to know is outside to outside and inside to inside on the towers, although CC of the screw holes would probably work - if your towers are identical othewise. Thickness probably wouldn't hurt either since if anything can go wrong it does.

Also J pups invariably have a freak dimention in actuality. What is penned as 3 5/8" when you get it may be more like 3 9/16" strong - and that can screw you up.

Oops, meant to say 3 1/2" not 3 5/8". The point being the dimentions can vary with whose measuring and the conditions surrounding the measurement. I always call it long when I measure a pup cause 1/16 short would probably drop more likely than a 1/16 long.

Okay, time to clean up the mess that I made in this thread.

The J pick-up is 3-5/8" long. :hyper:

For those of you wondering about the P pick-up, I was too. Since I was already sending an e-mail to Joe, I figure'd I'd throw it in there. He told me, "$18 for entire pickup."

I think I'm going to order them. A $38 set of pick-ups. :bassist:

just picked up a 8.7k... $18 +$15 shipping(damn... hawaii...) should be here next week... let everyone know how it is! stranging this is pretty exciting :hyper:

FWIW:

I just shipped a Bongo pup to Hawaii. The dude said USPS was best to Hawaii and UPS (maybe Fedx) from Hawaii to the states. I think it was like $6 insured for $100 so about $2.30 of that was insurance. Whoever is going to charge you whatever probably anyway but if you get a choice in the future, may be useful info.

I bought the 10K and 8.whatever and it was $42 shipped to Dixie for the pair. Came in a box big enough to hold probably 50 pups so thats pretty reasonable. Pretty cool dude answered the phone.

I've been dinking a little with the 10K one and it's LOUD but haven't got a feel for it yet.

I picked up a couple of these (went for the 8.7K ones as I like my Rumblefish PJ). One will be going in my Fender HMT bass this week when I get a chance to open it up and some soldering.

One thing I was a little disappointed in was that the pickup poles are fixed. On all the Rumblefish PJs I've had (3) the P pickup pole pieces were adjustable. I like adjustable pole pieces, even if I don't feel the need to adjust them (better to have the flexibility and not need it than need it and not have it).

But I'm still looking forward to reworking my HMT and getting it much more usable (I'm also going to be finally installing my Cafe Walter piezo buffer).

I don't have a use right now for the second, but since shipping was the same for 1 or 2 I sprung for a second one. Never know when you'll need a pickup . . .
