reverend P pickups -- $18!

conventionally, black is neutral/ground and white is hot. since these pickups are pre-wired in series, it's not as critical. there's no way to wire them out of phase.

i can't say anything about shipping -- i get mine when i drive over to the shop. it's a couple exits down 696 from me.

with all the praise for the 10k, i might have to pick one up. i really like the cutting tone of the 8.7k, but it might be nice to have a thicker, more refined option, too. would you say it's a full, round, and somewhat refined sound from the 10k?

robb.

I can't give a total evaluation of the PUP, but from what I've heard of it I like it.

I installed the pickup in somewhat of a junk bass, it's made out of driftwood and the action is just terrible. Before installing the pickups I tried adjusting the truss rod and I don't think it did anything. I will continue to try and tweak it to get it setup properly so I can assess it. For right now, I would say yes it is a fuller and thicker P bass sound. There isn't much of that traditional P bass sorta "twang" that you hear with punk bass lines (if you know what I mean) the only sort of twang is on the G string, it (i suppose obviously) sounds the brightest.

I don't think the darkness is too overbearing though, perhaps unconventional for a P. But I think I may like it.

Ok, ok, ok, ok....
After finally scoring a used Rumblefish P/J (which come with the 8.7 btw), I ordered another 8.7, and a 10k. For $42, how can I lose?
I've got two '72 Fender P's to use as test mules, one swamp ash fretted, one alder fretless, both maple necks.
I think I'll put the 10k in the fretless...that oughta be PHAT!

I wired up my 8.7k Rev pickup today. WOW! Super hot, punchy and fat. Can't imagine what a 10k would sound like. The E string is just punishing right now.

One question, I've noticed that when I pluck and hit a pole-piece I can hear an audible "Click". Not so loud like a string touching the pole, but it is there. Is that the nature of a hot and/or ceramic pickup? Never played a P-bass with so much juice before.

I snagged one of each type that they listed, 7.3K, 8.7K, and 10K, just to try out in my old P-Bass for the heck of it. For $18 bucks a piece, why not?

They're listed Invalid Link Removed, a little past halfway down.

Tried your link, took me to a Russian mail-order bride site...

Just wondering..... Isn't the standard vintage "P" pickup somehere in the 10 K range? Why would an 8.7 K p/u be so hot (high output)?? Is this a ceramic vs alnico thing? I'm going to order one of these tomorrow, and I'm looking for the one that's going to be the closest in sound to a 60's vintage "P" pickup. By the description on the page, that sounds like the 8.7 Does anyone have some real world experience with these vs. sound of a genuine Vintage "P" pickup? I know they're not going to be the same. Just looking for closest.

Thanks

The 8.7k does not sound vintage to me. Maybe it's the most vintage of all the Reverend pickups, but not compared to the Fralins and Nordstrands I've used in the past.

I'm sure that has a lot to do with the ceramic vs. alnico magnets, I just don't want a too modern sound. Anyone try the 7.???K That seems like it would be awfull low in output. Not that my genuine vintage "P" is an output monster either. Just trying to get as close as $18 is going to get.

FWIW:

DC resistance is a measure of DC resistance not output. Output will vary with the same DCR depending on the design, construction, and materials used in the pup. Ceramics will produce higher output than Alnico in general as reflected by the strength of the magnets. Most of the time a pup with higher DCR will have higher output, I have experienced exceptions.

Not sure how full proof it is cause I haven't done it that often but I've found sticking a small metal ruler I have to a pup is more reflective of output than DCR - at least during times when there was a contradiction between output and DCR. The pull has consistently been stronger on the pups with higher output.

Frequency response of the pup (higher frequencies are more audible and require less power), pup height, strings, and other factors will also affect output.

The real world experience wouldn't be worth much unless the pickup was the only variable, all else being equal.

So far I haven't run across a P that has anything on the Reverend, including a Fender '59 Custom Shop (Mike Dirnt), Barts, SD 1/4, BL EB-60P, among many others.

I'm not a real P fan in terms of the pup. Love recorded classic P tone - just can't say I've found it in a P pup, and I've moved and arranged them in every concievable orientation and altered everything I can otherwise. Been a long time since I've played through the EMG but it's pretty tough to get a hi-fi tone out of a P by virtue of it's location and design.

Thanks for the reply and the info.

For me, the lack of a hi-fi tone is why I'm so drawn to "P"s. :) I spoke with the guys at Reverend today, and decided on the 8.7K. Gonna give it a whirl, and see what I think. I almost ordered a Reverend P/J a few years back, but I just don't care for "J" size necks. Played the standard J/J Rumblefish, and thought it sounded great, but the neck size is all wrong for me.

How do you think the Rev,p/u sounds compaired to the S D 1/4 pounder? That's a p/u that I'm familiar with, and really don't like! Way too hot... too much treble for my taste.

The Rev P/J does not have a J type neck...or at least the one I have measures very similarly to the 51 Fender Precision Reissue I have: pretty chunky...

I'd be love to know what the width of the fingerboard at the nut is. I spoke with Joe Naylor on the phone about the necks a few years back and he told me they were all the same size @ 1 1/2" at the nut. That's "J" size. The J/J's that I've played in person were also this size as well. Did they offer different size necks later in the production run? If they did, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one.

Here's some press specs from '03

I can measure for you at lunchtime, I believe it was close to 1 3/4...
I'll throw the s/n number in there too. I bought it used from craigb here, dunno what year it is, but I like it:)

Yeah!!! That's sounds like something I'd like!! Maybe I'll have to go hunt one down if that's the case.

Can't wait to try out the Rev p/u. It's going in my test mule first, and then I'll figure out where it's permanent home will be.

My P/J has a very slim J neck, love it!! The only other bass I've played lately that's done it for me neck wise has been the Geddy, but now with my P/J and 5L, I'm set. Unless I find a turned aluminum 4 string to make into a fretless. :smug:

I'll be surprised if it doesn't measure 1.5". My understanding is that all Reverend 4-string necks are the same. I didn't notice a difference between the necks on my 2 PJs (or with the JJ or XL that I'd had in the past).
