reverend P pickups -- $18!

kent armstrong initially supplied pickups for reverend basses. i'm sure they might have some insight into what might work. i would be surprised if they make one for you if you call them.

my band's recordings have been finished, so here are some clips of the P through a peavey classic 400 and bergantino HT-112.

So here's my question, since I plan on tricking out my current bass. Are these things better or comparable to a P/J set of Seymour Duncan 1/4 Pounders? I play in a rock and roll band, and am looking for a nice thick, cutting, P sound. So hit me with your wisdom, talk bassers.

I was wondering this too, because I'm still debating on what pickup to go for with my SX. SD 1/4 pounders are on my "potentials" list along with these revered pups, and I'd like to know how they compare, too.

They sound different. There's no "better". They are just as good a quality as anything else out there. I like the sound better than 1/4 pounders but you may not.

FWIW:

I like the Reverends as well any P I've picked up and they are definitely a higher quality than they're priced. The Reverends are as appealing to me as an SD 1/4 Pdr and Fender '59 custom shop I've got. Different but not way different. Would probably be a matter of application or signal chain as to which one would step to the plate for me at a given point. What stood out to me about the Reverends was they were more melodic than most P's.

Kind of strange but I just ran an EMG 40DC at the bridge tonight and it does a P better than all of 'em no question. Little nasaly but not diminishingly so.

well, since this came back up, i'll say that i'm addicted to this pickup. i put a new set of d'addario XLs on my bass and have been playing it through the classic 400 into an HT-112. wow.

when the recordings are done, i'll post them. it's really incredible how good this pickup sounds.

for those who are curious what these sound like, this is my lyon by washburn plywood P clone with a reverend 8.7k pickup played through my peavey classic 400 and bergantino HT-112. i miked with a shure SM 57, so there's a lot more low end in the room than in the recording. sounds sweet.

Just saw on the Reverend site that the pickups are down to $12! May snag a couple more just cuz.
Good news for me! I just took the Reverend pickup in my Franken-P and put it in my Peavey millenium standard, and I intend to order another Reverend for the Franken-P today (The Peavey pickup is slightly oversized so won't fit in the Franken-P). This is a fantastic sounding pickup for any price. I feel like I won the pickup lottery this week. First I got a K&K Pure Western Mini for my acoustic guitar for $85, now I get a new Reverend pickup for $12. Good days.

For anyone with a MIM Fender, lower end bass with a P-style pickup this is a NO BRAINER!

You have had a great week, congrats!

I've been planning to get an SX or something to start practicing things like soldering and neck adjustments on, will be perfect for this.

I finally have gotten my hands on some Reverends! I bought two of them from TheBrad, an 8.7k and a 10k. I'm looking forward to converting my SX Jazz from a Jazz bass to a PJ.

I'll post my thoughts on here whenever I get around to installing one. I'll probably try out the 8.7 first.

Now to get a PJ Jazz pickguard......
Great minds think alike. I just ordered an SX J and an 8.7 for the same conversion. I'm going to put a series/parallel switch in it.

:D

Where do you plan on getting a pickguard? Have anything in mind for the bridge pickup?

I'm just going to pop the P pickup in place of the neck pickup on my wiring harness, so I'll have a par/ser switch too. I'll bet that sounds monstrous!

Pickguard Heaven doesn't have the Reggie Hamilton template yet, but that might work when they do. I haven't done a search yet to find out how close the Essex matches the Fender, but the screw holes look like they are in the same place. I've seen a couple of Hamiltons with different locations for the split coil, which worries me. I may just have a custom one made. Someone on here probably has already done it and PH has the template ready to go. If only we knew what to ask for.

I'm going to leave the bass alone for a bit to see how I like it. If I go ahead and drop the Reverend in it I'll try that for a while as well. I want to make sure I understand the difference between the Precision tone and the Jazz tone for myself or I won't be able to quantify any mods to it.

I'm probably going to put the P in reversed, so the D and G coil is closer to the neck. I'm not sure where to get measurements in regards to overall pickup placement, though....

Sounds like a good idea. Good luck!

I just ordered two of the 8.7 P's today and they will be here on Tuesday. I am thinking about getting a SX P bass and use one of them in there.... i figure that the other one will fine the right spot sooner or later.... and as cheap as they are now, why not?

I just put in an 8.7 in my P bass with a DiMarzio J in the bridge position. Haven't heard it yet as my amp's in the shop, but I'm expecting them to be a good combo.

Ultra Jazz or Model J?

I plan on using the Model J bridge pickup out of my set to pair with the Reverend P pickup. It should be a good combo, hopefully. Anyone know the "k ohm" rating of Dimarzio Model J's?

I got my Reverends in the mail today! They look great, and I can't wait to install one of them in my SX jazz. I'll most likely try the 8.7k first, since I imagine that would be more of a match for the Dimarzio Model J in the bridge position.

Unfortunately, I can't install the pickup until I get a Jazz pickguard with a P pickup route, so I don't screw up the placement of the P pickup route in the body of the bass. I eventually want to have the "Reversed P" setup, but that'll have to wait until I can afford a custom pickguard.

Can't wait to try these out! :D
