I'm contemplating ordering a new 4003 and am wondering how the new ones size up to the late 70's 4001's. I got a new 4001 as a HS graduation gift back in '77 ( it was $475 out the door) and really loved the build quality of that instrument. I set it up with DA Half Rounds and played it for a few months, but never took to it. My sloppy technique and lack of knowledge of setting up the bass, caused me to trade it off for a Jazz Bass; now in my 50's I still feel kinda bad about trading off my parents gift to me. Yes, I was young and dumb.
Latley I have been craving a fretted or fretless 4003 with T.I. Jazz flats, and am curious if the newer basses are still well made. Funny thing, seems like one can buy a new 4003 from Wildwood Guitars in Co, for $200 more than what they're going for used. Am I crazy....is this really happening?

I got a 2014 4003 new from a dealer about a month ago - it is perfect. Just my 2 cents, but it beats the heck out of the '76 4001 I had back in the day. Better tone, nicer neck, better fit/finish. I'm a lefty, so we pay more for Rics but this one was what a used lefty goes for so I went for it and am very happy. Pics:

All I can tell you that is the build quality of the new Ric's is amazing.

I love everything about mine and wouldn't hesitate to recommend a Ric 4003 to anyone that asked.

It's an amazing bass!

I wish I was in the market so I could get one of the new Walnut models - those are beautiful!!

Good luck on your search. . . .

My new 4003W is flawless. The Sam Ash I purchased it from keep the nice stuff behind the counter so it was barely touched when I bought it. Action is little high due to the high cut nut they leave the factory with, but after a few hrs of play, I decided I like it as is.

Mine was made in 1998, and I got it used. It has a couple issues, but those are probably due to something the original owner did. Fit, finish, electronics, and everything else are high quality and have held up well since it was new.
