*** is up with the beatles fanboyism in here? No one is really attempting to defend the Beatles other than saying "THEY WERE AMAZING GENIUSES." Start backing up your claims... stop automatically dismissing us when we argue otherwise. As a music student who almost never plays rock, I see nothing of interest in their music. This discussion will go nowhere unless you guys start substantiating your claims.

Richest bassist?

That would be Sir James Paul McCartney to be exact. Ringo doesn't count people, he's definitely NOT the richest drummer out there. Is he even still drumming?, if not he'd be in the "used to be" category along with countless others.
How can you prove anyone is a musical genius? Music either moves you or it doesn't and obviously their music doesn't move you. But it did and still does move countless other and has done so for going on 40+ years. From what I've seen their music crosses generational gaps as evidenced by so many young musicians continuing to play their music and name them as influences.
FWIW, the music of the Beatles is studied at many music schools all over the world. I have a good friend who is a composer of modern classical music and absolutely loves the music of the Beatles - maybe I should ask him to elaborate on what exactly it is that he likes but my guess is he'll say - they are simply great songs. Strip them down to guitar and melody and they still work perfectly.
My son will be a senior in music school (jazz performance) this coming fall and knows and loves their music. He's as likely to throw on Revolver as and Miles. I've not asked him but I would guess your view (especially as music student) would come as a bit of a surprise to him.
Anyway, its A-okay by me if you don't like them.

I was completely unimpressed by all sorts of people who had actually achieved things, so I'm actually reading some of these posts with bemused fondness.

You know what? you're hugely pissing me off always trying to make others think the same way you do. Maybe you're right, and they are wrong. If they don't want to hear truth, that's their problems. OTOH, if they are right and you are wrong, you're losing time and energy debating for something you have already lost. Telling that a bassist as an influence on another bassist is something very very subjective. Hell, you can only be sure someone is influenced by someone if that player tells it so (and even there, you need to separate influence with inspiration). Otherwise, you cannot, in no way, prove, meaning demonstrating without a doubt, that the player in question is influenced by someone else.
I personally don't think (this is an opinion here) that the beatles had an influence as big as people say. I think the influence thing was overhyped by the immense popularity of the band (look at how many metalheads would say Metallica had a huge influence on the metal scene, which isn't the case). Sure, they had an immense social impact and on the music scene (cultural impact), but musically speaking, I don't think they were as influential as people say.

As a music business hopeful, I can respect the Beatles IMMENSELY for their record sales and pop appeal. Definitely for their record sales. Absolutely for McCartney's investment skills.
But for their music, as it pertains to my musical vision be it bass playing, song writing or otherwise? I'll take a pass. That's all I'm saying.
And I hope the "teenager with a lot of effects" doesn't refer to me... I play with an absolutely clean signal chain with one of the purest/cleanest DI's available. I can't STAND effects, because to me there isn't one out there that doesn't suck a little bit of bass out... and I refuse to sacrifice the integrity of my bass frequencies...
And he got most of that from James Jamerson's technique..
Seriously, I think Paul is worth over 1.0 Billion... easily wins.
