Rickbacker Basses

Actually it's plastic and is just a cover. It does not change the tone and can be removed rather easily. Some pick players like them and use it for a palm rest but as a finger player I always took mine off.

(some Rics have a horseshoe p/u that looks like a split cover where the shoes do change the tone but I doubt this is what you are referring to)

I was just playing a Fireglo 4003 about an hour ago ! Asked the salesman that same question...he was a drummer :rollno: . Its a pickup guard (maybe so you don't hit the pickup with your pick ???) So the salesguy says you can take them off and I would probably do that because it got in my way. But as for sound difference ....hmmmm.... good question for Ric players.

I took mine off. Gets in the way. It doesn't change the tone.

Though it is plastic, it's plated with conductive material (and it's grounded when it's on the bass) and supposedly provides a bit of shielding, but I haven't noticed any difference personally.

I have a theory about this cover :ninja:

On the very first version of the Rickenbacker electric pickup the thing was actually a horshoe magnet (well, two horseshoe magnets))

Later, when the "normal" pickup was introduced, the cover was added just to preserve the looks...

I was thinking the same thing. Whats with all the pickguards n crap. What a strange contraption! If you look on the article on Rickebacker on Wikipedia theres a couple of pics of a Rickenbacker "frying pan" lap steel. The link is below.
