Rickenbacker 4001 copies

A9X - I guess I'm a sucker for quality - I bought my 4001 back in 1978 (it was made in 1974) and I still gig with it to this day. I doubt any of these copies would do the work for over 30 years!

The $364 I spent on that bass in 1978 was a much better bargain than any copy I could have bought. Anyway, life's too short to play crap instruments!

Why? Matsumoku have a stellar reputation for build quality and I have a number of instruments in my possession that are testament to this. I've seen a lot of Rics over the years, and they give nothing* away to my Greco in build and finish quality, longevity (mines 83) or based upon the one side-by-side comparo I did with a factory 4001, tone or sonics. I doubt you'd be able to pick the difference sonically in a blind test.

Whilst I appreciate your enthusiasm for the fine Ric basses, I don't think they're all that great - certainly nothing special in any way from any other well designed and made bass.

* To be completely honest, my Greco has one truss rod, but as the neck us rock solid, what difference does it make?

I've got a mate that works in a plastics shop who wants to make a Lemmy inspired truss rod cover for mine.

A9X: Cool - you're happy with your Greco and I'm happy with my Rickenbacker. That works for me!
Thanks. I would happily have a factory Ric. However, the maple ones are the only ones I like, and new, there is a long, indefinite waiting list for one, and a 7x price differential compared to what I paid for my minter. The few secondhand one's I've seen still don't appear to be worth the 3x+ price differential.

All I'm really wanting to say is that many of the lawsuit are clones are superb, and if you can score a good old one with a good price differential, then you get a great bass that isn't 'lesser'.

I'm impressed you've been playing the exact same bass for so long. Give me another few years, and I might be able to say the same about my Steinie.
Cheers

Crazyeelboy, do you have a hovercraft?

34", bolt on, Hondo

It needs some work--the main input jack is busted and one of the tuning pegs is broken.

Wish I had a better photo but my webcam takes awful instrument pics.

Well here's a couple of older pics of it in action
