Rickenbacker 4003 neck too thick?

. Hey, Sartori, if you really have a ric, why don't you just say exact width of YOUR ric's neck in digits??? Just curious.Looks like all of you have rics here, but no one could tell asked measurement. I asked about ten owners of rics on EBAY and they easily gave me digits when you gave me philosophy. What's up with you, guys??? Are you gurus?
P.S. I got digits from 54 mm (min) to 60 mm (max). The most polular digits were 57 mm (mid) just like I thought - a classical width.
Actually, like IronLung1986 said, for me, it's the neck comfort. That's the primary reason I play a Rickenbacker.
Don't get me wrong, the tones (there are many, not just one, like some people think) are awesome, too. However, I can get pretty close with quite a few other basses, at least with the amount of overdrive and coloration my rig imparts to the sound.
I can't really get close to the feel, though, with any other bass except a copy of a Rickenbacker. Surprising as it may sound to some, I have never played another bass that's more comfortable for me than a Rick. Not even close (except for a copy).

I don't go around measuring every part of my bass. Why is the width at the 20th fret so important to you?
Sure ebay sellers gave you exact measurements. They're selling their basses. They want you to buy them. There's a financial motivation for them to answer the queries of a potential customer. I have no such motivation, as I'm not selling my Rickenbacker now, or probably ever.
When you act rudely towards people who respond to your thread, they tend to become less inclined to help you, especially if you're new to the forum. They don't owe you anything. Their only incentive for helping you is wanting to be helpful (at least for most of the people on this forum, who are fairly nice people, unlike myself... I make no claims about being nice, because I'm not a nice person).
However, I will say that when people talk about Rickenbacker necks being thin, or thick, they're generally talking about thickness front to back, not the width of the fretboard.

For me Ricks are also comfortable to play. Especially the 4004s. But I also think the P and Jazz basses are comfortable as are the Gibson SG basses, and many others.

I'm 600 miles away from mine right now, that's one reason why.

I've owned a lot of Rics, '73, '75, '82, '06, etc, and the 06 was the "thickest". I hear the '87's have great thin necks. (front to back). If the fretboard WIDTH is so important, are you planning on playing an octave up?
The width at the first fret and the 12th fret should give you a good indication for comparison to your Epi Bird. (I've had several of those too, and they are very similar, although I didn't whip out the calipers and measure them in MM.) Sue me. I was too busy PLAYING THEM.

It's not that my Peavey isn't comfortable to play, it's just not as comfy as my Rickenbacker. Everyone's got different hands.
HNY TalkBass! This seems as good a place as anywhere to pose my question: I am ready to to buy my first Ric, but don't live anywhere close enough to play a bunch from different years first hand. I've decided to take the plunge on an online buy (from a reputable seller) of either an '86 or a '17 4003. The '86 has vintage mojo and looks be in good shape, but the '17 seems to be quite minty. Since the prices are nearly equal, the neck might be the decider. I'm leaning towards the '86 as the Google machine indicates that would have a slimmer neck, and that's more my thing. Would really like to get this right the first time - Can anyone offer insights to what I'd notice if I played them side by side?
