In 1974, I bought a Burgundy glow 4001 after seeing Yes's Relayer tour. I was 15-yo and studied Squire diligently. Then came Jon Camp of Renaissance and Rush who was more accesable as Yes is in a category of their own. Listening to isolated bass tracks of Squire's early recordings, he actually sounds out of tune sometimes to me and his tone was absolutely clean on the studio recordings. The way I got close enough to the Yes or Rush tone (live/Yessongs or live Rush/All The World's A Stage) was to have the treble pegged on my Ampeg SVT, every thing pegged on the Ricky (tone/vol) with the selector switch on treble pick-up. You have to have roundwound strings to get the growl and singing sustain like you hear on Squire's playing on his bass solo on Ritual (Tales).
I digressed, to make a long story short, I stupidly sold my 74 Ricky for big $ a long ways back as it was pristine only to replace it with a Gibson Victory Std bass (best bass for the $-period) which I could get close enough to a Ricky or a Precsision again by pushing treble (bass/amp). Bought a 1975 Ricky (year ago-disappointed) and am awaiting my V63 from Reverb as I write. Looking like the old 4001s might be having difficulty as the age as my 75 has nowhere near the sweet sustain of my past 74. I will post again once I get familiar with the V63 and get my tone with it dialed in...
