Rickenbacker stereotypes ??

I was once told "ProTools is the industry standard." I was like, so is a Ford Taurus, but I'd rather have a BMW.
Ricks are like sports cars. They look great, sound great, and perform great. Personally, I've always loved them.

You have to remember that TB is not the real world. I was playing for almost 40 years before I joined TB and I had never heard many of the things people whine about here. I still don't know what's wrong with the Pic bridge. I've never had a problem intonating any of mine. I've never had one where the neck wasn't rock solid and I didn't even know that the sharp edge hurts your delicate little arm, having logged thousands of hours over the years with no problem. I never heard anyone disparage a Ric until I joined TB. So take it all with a grain of salt.

I've never heard that before. And there's nothing wrong with rickenbacker, except all the flaws that make them a rickenbacker. They really just need to make basses with standard bridges, no pickup cover that limit you from adjusting your strings, standard/decent tuners, and a single easily adjustable fully functional truss rod like every other bass guitar in oroduction. Everyone would have one. Price tag staying the same or even a little more.

I've had 2 4003 basses in the past 4 years (A 2017 and now a 2020). I've played plenty in shops as well. I haven't seen flaws in any of the basses. Which flaws are you talking about?
They seem to be a well made instrument and can be found new for as low as $1400 (I saw recently from Wildwood....) which seems a fair price when compared to American Fenders and the high end model Gibson SG.

I've gigged a Jack Casady and Fender Jazz the past 2 years which have totally different ergonomics, I never had an issue with either of those basses....and find the Ric comfortable as well. I guess I'm not very finicky about bass shapes.

Whats wrong with dual truss rods? If you have a fwd bow in your neck you simply tighten the truss rod nuts (Yes, and please release the string tension....as you should on any bass when adjusting the truss rod).

The bridge allows for fine adjustment of string spacing and intonation....and has mutes! What's not to like??

Treble pick up cover: Easy to remove if you don't like it. I leave mine on and on the few songs I use a pick on I don't find it an issue.

I figured Rics must be for people who like to set something up once and just play it for the next 30 years. There could be something funky with the bridge and truss rod(s) but how would you know? The thing never changes.

Mine worked perfectly and sounded amazing. I had to sell them for various reasons, but they were neat basses.

I play Zon, Fodera, EBMM and a Ric V63 and love them all. Stereotypes are big bs. If you can't deal with the Ric bridge pu cover you're simply not skilled enough to play one.

...I appreciate that they're totally unique. There is nothing out there like a Rickenbacker. But they're not for me.

That’s pretty much me in a nutshell. Over the years I’ve had several opportunities to borrow one for a bit and every time it ends the same. I can’t find a way that is comfortable for me when i play one, but it’s not the only bass i’ve been unable to gee and haw with.
As for the haters? i guess some folks can’t help but be that way. Generally disgruntled or on about one thing or another. And don’t forget the depressing regularity of the “How many ways can we come up with to hate Fender” and “GC SUCKS!!” Threads that drop on an all too regular basis.
Oh, and no matter how much someone hates Ric, that hatred pales in comparison to the venom reserved for anything even remotely associated with all things Gibson bass.

Meh. Over 99% of the general population doesn't know what a "ric" is, and even after over a decade of spending way too much time on bass-related forums and websites I've never seen anything like that thrown around. I'd be tempted to file this under "r/ thathappened", but nothing's impossible I guess. Play whatever bass you like, ignore the fanboys and be happy.

Rickenbackers look cool, but no low end

My 2015 Ric 4003 has low-end for days, considerably more low end than my Fender Jazz and Precision have. And I have quite enjoyed messing with its pickups and adjustable pole pieces in search of the "perfect" sound. The 4003 pups remind me of my Gretsch Duo Jet's Filtertron pups - the slightest adjustment makes a big difference in how they sound, and it can be a challenge to find the sound you want, but once you do you are in the land of sonic utopia!

It is true that the 4001s were lacking in the low-end department. But the push/pull tone pot on the newer 4003s that allows for either the original Ric sound or the modern sound is a wonderful thing.

But I do wish I could palm mute on it...

Easily my favorite Ric, the rarest of birds, and priced way beyond what I can afford when they randomly show up for sale.....Like the 4003AC, a Ric with somwhat J spacing pickups has "Me" written all over it

I've found I've found the Rickeratti to be a fairly diverse bunch . The odds may be good , but the goods are odd .
I put flats on both of mine .

I’m considering stringing my 2018 4003s with flats. Which sets are you using? Just looking for suggestions. Thank You.

Yeah, but think about what your are missing. An significantly underpowered unstable vehicle with a steering column shape like a spear and one piece of sheet metal as a safety restraint, the cavernous effect of wood paneling, and a rather large congregation of dust mites living in your carpeting. I hadn't noticed that the new bridge doesn't extend right to the edge of the instrument, like the old ones that covered the gap in the binding.
