Interesting. Is this a "tone" thing, or playability, or both. My comment was playability - I didn't plug in the maple as I just didn't like it enough to wonder.

I think I could have a lot of fun w/ an ASAT. Din't know Russ had one there w/ and F hole, that's interesting. Last one I played was blue, but no hole that I recall. Could be memory failing though.

Playability of the Fireglo one was pretty good. I was reminded of the T-40 soundwise though. Just not as full of a sound as the ASAT.

I kind of wish I had bought a 4004L to start with.
I wouldn't even consider a 4003 now, unless I could get it for under $1k.

Ya gotta keep your eyes open...and your wallet full.
I missed out on two really good deals (and there are very, very few Ricks locally) because of lack of funds at the right time.
This was about 5-6 years ago and both were in the $700-800 Cdn range.

Like others have said, play before you buy. I was fortunate it was only 3 years old and not gigged. Obviously, if you have an opportunity to pick up a 4001 it's going to be over 30 years old so be critical and check everything.

Did the same thing in '78. I just had to have one so I saved up from a summer job and bought one. Had it shipped, by air, to Tucson so I had to convince my dad to take me to the airport to pick it up.
Still have it...I play it once and while but I use a Stingray or a Fender for practices and gigs.

I just got a 4003 this year. I wrote a review on here not too long ago. But yeah i had to play mine a bit to get used to it. Also i modded it with a thumbrest. I love playing it! Neck action and tone are out of this world.

I've owned a lot of different basses over the years,but keep coming back to the Ricks!
most of my variety comes from 5 really different Rick basses,but I do have a Fernandes Gravity 8 string,and a new 2014 Gibson EB that i really like,too.
I've pretty much given up on Fenders.
Here's the Rick brood.....
