Throb & Bassman those are two fine looking Rics.
I think this thread should be kept out on the main page it keeps getting bigger & bigger.
What kind of music do you all play with the Ric?
Me, I play in a psycobily original band with a pop edge. The Ric is the perfect pop bass and it cuts through two guitar players like a chainsaw...

i love to play my 4001 in a band similar to oasis. i play it with full volume on the bridge pickup selected, both fingerstyle and picking. the guys in the band love it because thaey can hear a clean and aggressive too bass sound without too much low end. i agree with you funkster, the rick is the perfect pop rock bass. and a joy to play.

Yes I have seen & played one at a local mom&pop store I fell in love with it when I played it. Thought about it for a couple day's went back and someone put a deposit on it, this was back in like 1993 I have never seen another in person since. I kicked myself until I found the JetGlo and this time I whipped out the Visa card and bought it on the spot..
The other cool color I love is the Silver with Blk hdwr if I ever seen one hmmm. Actually my fav would be the Blkstar If I ever found one of those for a decent price???

This is a pic of my latest bass!!! It's a 4003. I wish I still had my red one. I snaded the finish off the back of the neck & it sounded great. I traded it for a 76 P-bass a while back. I also owned another white 4001 that I wasen't too fond of & 2 black 4003's.

I'm will be using it in a hard rock/alternative original band alla Godsmack, Alice in Chains, Creed. I haven't used it yet since I got it Wed. My Guitarist dosen't really like that Ric sound, but he's not the one playing it. :)

Nice Ric Nino!!! Don't you worry the'll get used to sound. My original band looked at me with 4 eyes when I brought mine to practice until I plugged it in a recorded a set. Now they won't let me use anything else, Its just a smooth sounding bass with some monster tone capabilities especialy through a high powered Tube amp the Ric just eats up my SVT.

chris squire is a HUGE dude - i would NOT want to be introduced to his dark side.

i met him at a namm show a while back, he's very cool, but boy is he a big guy.

I don't think so. When I had the red one, I used it often w/them. He alway waoud say, "hey, where's your G&L", "Why don't you use the Soectors anymore". It never cause friction or arguments, but he's not to fond of it. I can't wait to play it live through my SVT-2 PRO (all tube) & SVT 810!!!!! It'll be monsterous!!!!!

Dud thats a bummer they won'y even give it a chance? I like G&L and Spectors but Rics rule.

I was looking @ your profile. What are "1982 St Blues BluesKing, 1983 St Blues BluesKing"? I also read (I think in this thread) that you recorded w/one.

I won't let him bother me. I know the Ric sound. I love the Ric sound. As a matter of fact, my drummer loved the red one I had. I forgot to mention that cause, well, he's a drummer. LOL.

The more I think about that red one I sold the sadder I get. :(

Dude sneek it in and record it maybe they will change there mind. We are finishing up our first disc right now and we did it in a studio where they had a house 71 Fender Jazz bass that was nice. I love old Fenders but I was determinned to record with the Ric. They laughed at me when I brought it in with my St Blues, until they recorded them. I never once used the house bass and I did 6 tracks with the Ric and three with the St Blues. Bill the engineer said, My Ric was the most unusual sounding bass he's ever recorded but it sat unbelievable in the mix. We are almost done with it I promissed Dave Siff the first copy and I'll send one out to you to check out also when it's done.

Hey guys! With a name like Rickenbackerman I just had to chime in. :) This is a great thread!

About the extra capacitor and what it's for - I hadn't seen the reason posted yet so I thought I'd let you guys know. This info is from Mark Arnquist who is a certified "Rick guru". The extra cap is there to increase treble on the bridge pickup. That's all, nothing more. Volume is increased when you remove it, but that's just a side effect. The reason to increase treble on an already twangy bass is because it was originally designed for use with flatwounds, which are inherently duller-sounding than rounds... But when they redesigned the 4003 for use with rounds, they removed the cap...

Also, for anybody out there who has truss-rod problems with their older 4001's (stipped nuts, bent rods, whatever), Mark Arnquist has a solution. It takes a little machine work and some general "handyman" skills, but I did the mod to the rods on mine and the rods now function flawlessly...

I've got a '79 4001, and it's a workhorse! Bought it for $200 with a broken headstock, no bridge, and no bridge pickup. Fixed the break, threw a badass and a set of bartolinis in it (yes they do rule!) and it thumps like no other! It's got a chipped, dinged, and generally molested burgundy auto-body shop respray, but doesn't look bad from more than 10 feet away! LOL $330 invested!

I used to have an azureglo (blue) '78 which I sold a few years ago for $500 because I needed the money. (banging head against wall) Stupid, stupid, stupid!

My 86 4003 is the midnight blue with black trim. It's lost a little of its shine but still looks really good. Music123.com sells 4003s and one of the color options is "desert gold," which I would think has to be a mistake. Still, I would love that color, kind of a Les Paul gold with chrome and the great matching headstock. Boss!

Anybody else have a problem pulling the "g" string off the fret board like me?

A shop in my area has a 4003 in bright red w/black hardware & pickguard. It's new but beat up. I know, if he still has it, he'll cut me a deal on it. I should bring my white one to compare to see if it's worth buying. I am a sick, sick man!!!! :)

Oh, the "red" one I said I had was actually burgandy.

i have'nt met chris but it is nice to hear he is a cool guy, one of the first that made me want to play.

you got to admit, most pics you see from the old days big guy or not he always has on the suede boots :D

These basses were made in the early 80's as a nice alternative to Fenders declining quality. They were made by Strings&Things in Menphis Tenn. These babys are pretty rare.
I have owned the one on the left since 82 and nomatter what, I would never give that bass up. It's one of those basse that just sound killer nomatter what you play it through. Acousticly it sounds unbelievable, It's nothing special it's just the one, It has the magic. The one on the right is a 83 I bought from BassPalace this year It's a nice bass but it's not as nice as the other. I have done all my recording with the 82 up to me getting the Ric, the new original band I'm the guy's just like the sound of the Ric, but I still recorded three tracks with the 82 Blues

...because this thread is just too damn good to let die!

My Azureglo pawnshop 4001 has become an extension of my body - I love this thing!

I did the capacitor bypass on the second day. I left the cap in place, and simply shunted it with a short piece of insulated #18 hookup wire tack soldered in place. Man, did that make the bridge pickup roar!

I replaced the worn-out tuners ("keywinds" in Ric parlance) with new Ric ones (an exact fit, all the holes lined up), replaced all the screws with bright new ones (a huge appearance improvement for less than $5), and am waiting for my replacement pickguard to come in from Don in Minnesota. The total cost for my Ric and all the parts to fix it up is going to be about $490.

Now I want a fretless Ric, and a 4003 for heavy roundwounds, and a 4005 for that semi-hollow vibe, and a...

it's really nice that this thread came back! it's my favorite one!
happy to hear you like your rick so much, you did a great deal. about the strings, on mt '80 4001 i use roundwound without problem. it's on of the last 4001 models and my luthier said that the truss rods are really hard to beat, much stronger than fender's. so roundwound strings are not a problem!
but i still prefer the flat on the rick. i love the 4005 too. it's a shame that they are so hard to see and find and so expensive!

I would love to get a hold of a 4008 8 string ric for some of the poppy originals we do. I heard one a couple of months ago and it sounded like a piano,
