Great pics on Mike Park's "The Rickenbacker Page" site from the recent NAMM show. (see barroso's link above)
Here's the low down on how they came to be, and who decided what they should look like and represent.

Note, the only instrument that is part of the C-Series that is NOT as it was when it originally left the factory in the early 60's is the 4001C64S. This is McCartney's 4001S bass as he modified it in 1970 with the shaved upper horn, changed bridge pickup and surround, ect. The 4001C64 is a accurate reproduction of the bass while he played it in The Beatles.
One final other note on the C-Series basses above, both models are offered as right handed instruments, but have left handed headstocks. Just as all left handed Ric 4001 and 3's have right handed headstocks as standard. It takes a little getting use to seeing a left handed head on a right handed instrument IMHO.

I hear ya Nanook I don't even have that P.O.S bass anymore it was a 98 American Std J, what a dog it was and I love Fenders but it was clunker. The Ironic thing is I sold that bass in last summer to buy my birthday RIC so It's kind of a tribute. By the way My original band is finishing up the new CD and I used the RIC through a Ampeg SVT Classic on all but three tracks. I brought all my basses to the studio and the ones that made the album were my St Blues and the RIC. The RIC sounded huge and it cut through both guitars in the mix perfectly and it had the most balanced output. What a score when I found that one. When I opened he case the engineer frowned until I plugged that bad boy in and it only took 15 minuets to get a happening sound.

yeah? i get frowns all the time...and from sound guys at gigs too...it's usually the pickup hum (nothing you ever hear in a recording, especially if you run thru a noise gate).
"have you got another bass?" they ask. "bugger off" i answer.
can't let engineers and producers dictate what we want to sound like!
The first time I used my Rick in a studio it came out so low you can't hear it, except for slapping & popping which came out really trebly. Yuk!

My RIC is quiet as a mouse, 1984 4003 Jet Glo even with the bypass surgery.

So you guys don't have a problem with yr pickups picking up neon/fluorescent/unshielded power interference?
Man, I played on TV once, the power cables for the studio ran under the floor, but it was like no shielding - the hum from my amp started to drown out people talking!
I guess if I was playing nancy acoustic music it'd be noticable, but I jusy let the guitars drown out any noise!

Yup, Land of the Long White Cloud. The place where everything that is interesting costs too much. The place where the bass and amp selection sucks!
I still cringe when I see the price of a new Ric in the USA...you lot have it too good!
