You can see from the pic that my '82 4003 doesn't have binding.

Sorry for being ignorant, but what are toasters and horseshoes?
Are they made by Rickenbacker?
Where do they normally live?

TPFTF - Yours is a 4003S model, not a 4003. Same as a 4003 except no binding and no inlays...

Yes horseshoes and toasters are made by Rickenbacker...

The horseshoe is a different bridge pickup design used on early 4001's - check out the chris squire or 4001V63 bass to see it.

A toaster is a guitar pickup. Yeah, a guitar pickup! They were used in the neck PU position on early 4001's and still use them (I think) in the 4001V63's... the chris squire bass has one in the neck position also.

Mine just says "4003".

I'm dispensing with the whole mounting plate on my bridge pickup, so it'll look a little chrome-less.
Does a horseshoe have the same assembly? If not it could work putting one in there...

Any pics of horseshoes or toasters around?

Well I took the plunge and bought a new 4003. Fireglo. Now I just need to learn how to play it. I got it from bass central in orlando fla. They were real patient with me and stayed and hour past closing just to let me try things out and make my decision. Got a lot of good info and advice from gard and beaver.

One thing is strange though for some reason the bass does not sound as good through my combo amp as it did through their eden setup Hmmmm.

I came real close to buying a sterling. Man it felt real good in my amature hands. It is definatly the next bass I will buy.

Funkster, let me know how you like that horseshoe once you get it installed! I think you'll be diggin it...

Shumph, you have to take the strings off, then remove the assembly. Undo the screws that hold the assembly together, then put it back together without the cover. (don't forget the springs!)

i'm really angry. i want to put horseshoe and toaster pickup on my workhorse 4001, but it seems that no one is really able to help me. i live in italy and the italian distributor doesn't seem to be interested in my request. usa retailers said that due to factory agreement they do not ship worldwide. i sent another email to the rick company andi sencerely hope that they can help me, even if in the previous email they said that the italian distributor was carrying tha parts...

Do any of you actually use the volume and tone controls on your Rics?

I leave the tone knobs at about 3/4s and adjust the volume alot because I use a wireless and depending on various things it tends to cause me to have a bit of a pregain problem.

I'm at full on both volumes and both tone controls, without any issues (wireless here too).
But, my 4003 has a much hotter output than my 4008 (both with the cap bypass)...like quite noticeable.

Does anyone know what volume and tone pots to use for a more linear control? It's like there's a ridiculously small amount of travel between 100% volume/tone and 0%...

I wonder if anyone knows how Bartolinis replacement pickups for a 4003/4001 sounds like?
I like the sound of the humbuckered 4004 cheyenne better than the 4003 but like the playability and looks of the 4003. Do you know how any other replacement pickups sound (seymor duncan, alembic...)?

I would but I dont think they fit. The distance between the strings and the body on the cheyenne is bigger than on the 4003. But I will investigate it closer.

Also what color should I buy (I havn´t got the bass yet). But my local store has one of each color on the way (Brand new 4003´s btw inkuding the new limited edition gold).
