Jock, I had a set of barts in my 4001. The had great lows and ok highs but lacked the midrange bark (and output!) of the horseshoe bridge pickup that I recently installed. I put the button-top neck PU back in too, but since i mostly use the bridge PU, that's the one I notice more.

If you've heard a fender with barts, you know what they sound like. These were no different.

Barts out, horseshoe in!

I e-mailed Rickenbacker and asked if the humbuckers in the 4004 would fit a 4003 bass. They answered the same day (great customer support!).
They said that it would fit if I had a newer 4003 post 1990 it would fit. "Homer voice:-Woohoo!"
If only the bass would arrive at my dealer soon...

Again what color do you think is the nicest?
Do you guys know any site with pics of 4003´s in different colors.

I have to say that after reading this whole thread (Hey, what can I say? I was bored) that I'm practically salivating for a Ric. Unfortunatly from what I hear it's a good Rock ax, but not much good for anything else...unless there's someone out there who's had a good experience playing a Ric in a jazz or fusion or funk etc... setting.

I don't know about Jazz or Fusion, I am sure it has been done. As far as Funk Rick James played one.

I´m a bit confused. I read on the Rickenbacker forum that some guys had removed the magnet covers on their horseshuepickups without any trouble. I do want to believe them but I thought that that cover was a part of the pickupmagnets (or something).
If this is true horseshue is the way I will go on my soon purchased 4003.

I played my first Rick today. It was a '75 4001 in Jet Black, with the bridge pup cover removed. There was a chunk of finish missing along the top of the neck, frets 3-5, which had been reglossed. There were also hundreds of belt scratches on the back, and the thing was just a little dusty and looked beat up. Store wanted £895($1320) for it.

I didn't plug it in(the guy was ranting over the phone, didn't get a chance to plug into the SVT classic and the Ampeg 8x10's I was salivating over) but I fell in love with the neck. It wasn't *my* perfect neck, but it was maybe 2nd or 3rd(only 4 string neck I liked better was a Stingray or a Spector). Just great, and I could seriously dig playing it with a pick. I nearly had to force myself to put it down, I had to play that Thunderbass.

I play funk on a 4003, the problem is getting under the strings to pop, also the strings hitting the chrome pickup guard (and the action is already high).

So far as I know, you are the only Ric player who still has the pickup cover in place, all others have been disguarded.

The Rick set up is infinately adjustable, so what ever you want can be done. Have a pro set it up to your specifications.

I took my cover off, Much more versitile! Can't sell it though.
Rickenbacker man I installed my horseshoe pup last night in the 4003, Toataly changed the tone from great to awesome! I don't know about you guy's but I find the shoe to make the bass a little more aggressive sounding. Tons of bottom but a great Honkin midrange tone when dialed in properly sounds incredible.
I get much more bark and the output seems just a bit hotter than the stocker with the bypass.
All in all I'm happy with the change although by the time I got it done last night it was late so I didn't have time to really dig in and crank it up. This weekend will be the test playing it in a live situation to see how she cuts through.

Is the cover (covers. It seems to be cut in two) on the horseshuepickup removable? I posted that Q a bit up this page and inqluded a link to where i got this idea. Please give me your thoughts on thís.

hey funkster let us know how this sounds! as you probably know i'm from italy i play rock on my 4001 and i'd really like to put and horse shoe on my mapleglo 4001. i'm looking for someone that could help me, i really want that pickup and the only way seems to have a friend or relatives in the usa that could buy and ship the pickup to me. i'm ready to send money to someone that could to do this for me... hoping some rickenbacker brother will help..

the trouble is that here in italy the price for an horseshoe pickup is much more than in usa. i'd pay less buying directly from usa. if someone could help, it will be really appreciated....

Just to be sure, I'm talking about the metal mounting plate - I discarded the plastic cover long ago.

Well, I would just like to say I picked up my first Ric today. It is a 1997 4003 in Jetglo.

I read in this thread (I haven't read ALL of these messages) about the 'bypass surgery', and I have a question regarding that. Should this be done on all models or just the older ones? Like should I do this to mine, or is it fine?
