Rickenbacker

it will never die!

ok, here is the deal: i live in the netherlands and want a rick. i can get a new rick here for at least 1700 euro's. With full warranty etc.

Alternatively, i can get one from the US. After shipping and taxes, it will cost me only 1200 euros in total, but i will have no warranty at all.

Now i have been hearing things about neck problems.

Importing one, do or dont? How consistent is Rickenbackers nowadays?

And if i'd get one, and problems would arise, would it be fixable, and for how much?

It's strange, since in Italy you can find a brand new 4003 for 1200-1300 euros. Let's come and buy one here! :)

RIC's is quite good with quality control...i dont think you have to worry about anything there.
The neck problem thing you hear about is on older rics...if your going for a new 4003, you should be safe.

weird.

where could i get one? youve got an internetn adress, preferably one that ships in EU?

im planning a vacation to italy!

I believe www.pickofthericks.com will ship RIC's over waters.
I usually go to www.ricpage.com for all my RIC needs...but im not sure they deliver internationally.
There is also Link Removed who is a European dealer...you could always try them as well.

im sorry, i was talking to marcinkus. i already knew that shops.

ricpage is more expensive than pick of the ricks. rics r us is unbelievably pricy.

i was ready to buy the JetGlo on Pickofthericks, but he sold it. was too slow on email, i was emailing with chris clayton for a week and then.... poof! sold.

They can ship overseas, but they only do so without warranty. Now im convincing music123 to do the same, they first rejected me without really reading my question. they should read better. are they just trying to be stupid? i had to tell them twice there are other dealers that ship overseas and so can they... probably!

Ricpage being more expensive must be just an overseas thing? Cause they are always cheaper with me. Im getting ready to order a new Fretless Ric in a few weeks so i was gathering prices for info. Chris was selling at 1149$ plus 50$ for shipping. Where as Mike from the Ricpage was only charging 995$ plus 40$ for shipping.
(Those prices are in USA dollars and i didnt convert to Canadian by the way)
Anyway...i hope you find a Ric. They are great instruments.

Pick of the ricks was charging $995 for a black jetglo, ricpage $1095.

music123 985 + their shipping calculator says shipping is only $103. They cant ship ricks overseas due to their contract with rick, but i told them to give ric a call, because if potr and ricpage can, music123 probably can too.

Thats strange. Must be because of a region thing. They must have to charge so much depending where it goes.
Ric's dealers can be pretty anal about shipping...some wont even ship out of the USA or even out of their state anywhere.
Hopefully Music123 can come through for you.

i bought a '92 fireglo rick.

it has some weird humbucker in bridge position - anyone knows what it is?

is technically in good condition. little fretwear, straight neck etc.

cosmetically in bad condition for a '92. pretty many chips in paint. why do people take so little care of their basses?

cost me 700 euros, for just the bass, no case or whatever. he did include a tool to adjust truss rod.

how exactly does the stringmute work, how do you turn it on and off?

There are two thumbscrews on the bridge at both ends of the mute compartment that control the height of the mute pad. The whole assembly can be a little weird and fragile at times, I've found (the foam pad comes unglued from the support, etc) and actually I've never had much use for mine in the 12 years I've owned my Rick (much prefer to hand mute on the fly.) I have a Bartolini pickup that fits inside the compartment on order that I intend to install in place of the mute stuff.

That pickup is a seventies Bridge pickup for an Ibanez Rick copy bass, despite it's double rowe of pole pieces, it is not a humbucker, there's a single coile situated between the rowes of pole pieces.

I happen to own an Ibanez with such pickups.

is the pickup any good? or am i better off ordering a SD, bartolini or original rick pu?

Depends on what flavor of Rick tone you want. You can go the purist route and get an original pickup and that will work beautifully for a "pure" Rick tone.

I've tried the SD Basslines bridge pickup and it wasn't too shabby, but after a while I found it wasn't quite what I was looking for. Now I've gone all Barts (neck and bridge), and I just love it. It's like a combination between the classic Rick twang and that warm, woody, growly Bartolini sound.

If you can find a copy of Stretford's Long Distance...that is what SDs sound like in a Ric. I bought my Ric used and already modified with a badass 2 and SD Ric Replacement pickups. Tone...well...hands down it was the best sounding, feeling 4 string I've ever picked up and played. Very bassy ballsy while still retaining the Ric grind. Of course this also depends on how you eq it or how the sound guy eqs it in the studio. Very high output pickups. I loved the tone.
