What a GREAT thread! I "retired" my 80 4001 about 5 years ago. I "replaced" it with a G&L ASAT (hence my name). Notice which came first! After reading about the modification for the treble pickup, I'm gonna have to try it and bring her back into full time service for me!

My fav strings for her were D'addario XL reds. They turned your fingers black, but they sounded incredible on her. Kind of sounded like a piano was doubling what I was playing. Wish they still made them.

As far as favorite Ric songs, nobody mentioned Blood And Roses by The Smithereens. First 10 seconds is Ric heaven. Nothing but the bass playing the riff. Surprised a rapper hasn't looped it for a sample yet! Also, the first 3 R.E.M. recordings, almost said records! Almost revealed my age! Some of the tastiest melodic playing since Sir Paul.

I remember the xl reds, I used to use them on my first bass(a hondo:rolleyes: ) to TRY to make it sound like a Ric. that was a loooong time ago.love the sound of those strings though,very piano like, and they looked really cool when they're new. the only thing I did'nt like about them is they did'nt last very long...being copper wound and all,which is probably why they never "caught on" and therefore discontinued...

Well I tried the modification last night, and now the neck pickup doesn't work....hmmmm. Unfortunately I didn't try out the bass before I took her apart, and it's been awhile since I REALLY played her last. I did notice a really thin wire going underneath the neck pickup that wasn't connected to anything. I thought it was a ground wire. I wouldn't think that would cause the problem. Any ideas?

I haven't used my Rickenbacker for a long time, but I dusted it off yesterday and plugged it in, only to find that the bridge pickup was dead. Reason: One of the capacitors had broken in two :eek:. How can that have happened?

Well, I remembered this thread and something about removing a capacitor... and yes! That's the one that is broken. I can just replace it with a piece of wire... The Surgery...:cool:

I'm after a 4003.....was looking at importing one from the US to the UK but have been told that the dealers aren't allowed.

Shame, as it would save me about 500 quid. Daylight robbery over here.

Cheers for the link fella, but with current exchange rates I could pick a new one up in the UK for about £100 more. :)

ok, here is the deal: i live in the netherlands and want a rick. i can get a new rick here for at least 1700 euro's. With full warranty etc.

Alternatively, i can get one from the US. After shipping and taxes, it will cost me only 1200 euros in total, but i will have no warranty at all.

Now i have been hearing things about neck problems.

Importing one, do or dont? How consistent is Rickenbackers nowadays?

And if i'd get one, and problems would arise, would it be fixable, and for how much?
