Ricks need a little touch of drive to shine!! and if you have a 4001 the third capacitor bypass surgery is needed!!

my 4001 has enough punch and growl to match my american P or a Jazz

It's either a copy or a true Rick with very special customisation. Rather looks like a copy, and according to Mr John Hall's statements, all Rickenbacker copies are illegal.

Amen to that! Looks like you've got the toaster/horseshoe combo in your Rick, marcinkus! Must sound KILLER through the Ampeg gear!

My dream rig would be to get the toaster/horseshoe combo in my 4003, slap on a badass bridge (if I ever have the balls... or perhaps get an old beater for modding...), vintage V4B, SVT 8x10... ooo mama!

Finally qualified for posting into this humungous thread (thanks to contributors, it has been useful while dealing with this attack of GAS).

Picked me up a new 4003 lefty fireglow this weekend. Had to trade my hotrod fender P to justify the cost though.... I have no idea how these basses can retail for the same money.

I still keep opening the case just to look at it - it is a thing of beauty.

Unfortunately (Fortunately?) my wife won't let it into the bedroom

I have a chance at getting a 1979 4001 and I was wondering if it has 1 truss rod or 2? Do they sound good with solid state amps because I have heard that Ricks sound better thru tube amps. I have an Ampeg SVT4-Pro solid state power, tube pre. The Rick has some pretty good wear on it and the guy is wanting like $800-900 for it. I was thinking $500 would be fair.

What do you all think? Thanks.

I think that they improved the design in 82 with the introduction of the 4003, Don't qoute me on that.

There is nothing wrong with the 79 4001's and if it's s good price (500 to 750 in the condition you describe) and it play's good go for it!

Yeah, I'm going to give it a shot. Thanks for all the great info. Do you recommend the PU bypass wiring that was mentioned earlier in this thread to get more output from the bridge PU?
