I think Heavy is right! I have had a 76 4001 and I own a 84 4003!
I think they always have had the double rod set up thats what made the Ric so unique!:)
I also believe that Ric just made refinements to the double rod system in 84 accounting for the more baseball bat feeling neck and wider string spacing like on my 84!
I remember my 76 had the dual rod system because it was the only bass that I wouldn't set up on my own back then..
I could be wrong I'm just going by my own findings :D

it's comforting for me to see so much information on ric 4003's.i recently ordered a ric 4003 jetglo lefty as my first bass,a 35th birthday gift for myself.

i have to say,my choosing a ric was based in how it sounds;truly a distinctive instrument.as i studied the rics i learned about the good quality control,uncompromising features,and playability.

i haven't told any of my bass playing friends,as i would like to be at a semi-playable level before i seek advice.i've got my metronom,a tu-12 tuner,my elixir nanowebs(i want to minimize fret wear while i'm learning),the book 'effortless mastery',and a 2 month wait...sniff.

Hi,

To the best of my knowledge I just did the .047 capacitor bypass surgery on a 1977 4001 belonging to one of my friend`s parent.

I do not notice any change in the output of the bridge pickup and I know I did bypass the right capacitor, the one that controls the bridge pickup. Is there any special type of wire I had to use or anything like that. I totally removed the capacitor and directly connected the volume control.

The Bass just sounds incredible anyway and I find compared to my 4001V63, it has less bottom end but I find that 1977 one has more the "Geddy Lee" to it than my V63. The V63 has a clean sound IMHO. I might even buy the 1977 cause I find the two Basses have different tones ! It`s Rick all the way !!!

Anyway, please let me know for the surgery if you have any idea.

I know that Ricks take a dive in price once sold again, but how big is the dive? Just an assumption would be great, 30%? 40%?

I'm thinking of hunting down a used one this summer, aside from what I already know about them I want to get every little detail I can to get the price down. If I manage to actually find one.
