right now he is using a Behringer 4x10 paper coned combo./QUOTE]
I'm assuming that cost is a concern given the current rig.
Not really, its been more of i'll use this system while i save up my pennies for something much better sort of deal. The Behr has worked but he wants something else.
Honestly, compared to what your bassist is using right now, most professional quality bass amp/cab set-ups in the 750-1200w range would be a HUGE improvement and probably make him very happy if eq'd correctly. I'd try this first before spending 4k on an esoteric "sub-like" rig.
I agree, but in the end its his rig not mine. So far he's leaning towards the Carvin 2000w head. The thing is, he's trying to make this the last system he ever buys, and while that may or may not happen lot's o' power and low end is basically what he is looking for.
+1
Any guy that is using an EB-0 with flatwounds and a felt pick definitely knows what he's after from the instrument end of things.
The miracle is how he ended up with a 4x10 in the first place.
Yeah he like to say he plays base instead of bass, its the massive earthmoving foundation that the band sits on, sounds great for a power trio.
He liked the 4x10 because it didnt flub out as fast and seemed clearer than a single 15 or 18. We do play some faster songs where he is doing the Jack Bruce rhythm bass thing and the little bit of added clarity is nice.
1500 watts? unnecessary. just because your current 450 watt head is lame doesnt mean a 1500 watt head wont be. Behringer? Well known to NOT have the most flattering tone
Its not just the Behr that he has played that has ran out of headroom. Its not a volume issue, its a headroom issue. Words cannot describe how low he seems to get without downtuning, think a tonal earthquake. Add that tone to playing haevy with a pick and you have limited headroom. He also has a couple solos in our set that it would be nice to boost his volume more without pegging his limiter.
The Carvin amps are pretty good. The BRX cabs are very nice sounding - I like the tone of mine - but not anywhere near as deep as the numbers would suggest, so not a good option if you're looking for real big low end.
Good to know, he was leaning towards one of those and a carvin 18.
