Really? I always have a better time with my sound outdoors (no walls and crap for my sound to bounce off of), but then I almost always play with a 18 outside, so I'd say buy a few 18s.

I should say I've never played an outdoor gig at anytime that I had good gear
I will have to try again with my current rig. And maybe a 2x15.

Interesting guitar rig too...looks like Crate and Krank. If it's the Crate head I'm thinking it is, I have the 65 watt 1x12 combo version that absolutely kills when plugged into an EVM 12L loaded TL806 cabinet...

I've been posting on here for a few weeks I suppose. In case any of you have noticed the list in my signature and thought YEAH RIGHT. I thought I'd have some fun and test the new strobe for the Nikon and take a couple shots of my ROD for you.

Understand I've got pieces coming in everyday for this thing. I still have to add the big power buss to the bottom where that big 8 gauge power cord on top plugs in and the power conditioners will connect to it. The unit is 30amp 120/240 so the power buss has 2 circuits of 30amp 120V on it. In quick fashion I will be able to adapt to 60amp 120V or three phase 120/208 if need be.

Still to arrive is the Radial JD-7 hopefully monday or tuesday that will allow the four amps be be driven through their instrument inputs. Right now I have all the amps connected in the rear using 1 preamp. The JD-7 is an experiment.

I also am expecting a Korg DTR-2000 tuner and the final additon will be a Shure UHF-R radio system, I have still to figure out WX I will use a dual or single channel unit.

ON the rear, the power panel will have a couple fans blowing air into the rack and the panel at the top will be a couple pulling air out.

As you have noticed with my posts the SVT-4PRO is rather picky about where its cooling air comes from.

When this rig is complete it will be driving 8 of the big AMPEG cabs. The ceiling in the room its in right now is only 7'11" so I will have to build the studio the wife is exiling me too with 10' ceilings.

While on the 3 hour bus ride home from my kid's football game I was busy designing a rack that will winch up the upper cabs from the ground and the bottom cab will roll right into the rack. Four racks will quickly bolt together to securely hold the 8 cabs and keep them safe.

This has been a fun project and I am really looking forward to pulling it out and unleashing it on unsuspecting victims.

I was thinking of waiting until it was all complete, there's a lot of wiring and fabricating of panels yet to do. All the speaker connections etc will be mounted in rear panels and the rack will be closed off.

I got it running with three amps yesterday before racing off to the game, with concerns about blowing the circuit they were on, it was very impressive over two amps. I'm starting to hear bass now. BOB

did you ever think about a preamp and 2 crown or qsc power amps? im just saying that that would be eons lighter and louder than four svp pros but non the less

UncleJam to answer your question and most people have reasons for decisions/gear selection. I had experience with the 4PRO, I also owned one when I started the growth spurt.

The SVT-8PRO's are a lot lighter too at 23#, plus they are 1U shorter than the 4PRO. I could have done what I've done so far with just two of them.

I wanted to stay with AMPEG. I wanted to get as close to the tube sound without power tubes. The other option would be those 90# heads sitting on each cab. I went for the modern rack dealy.

If they had been making the SVP-1600 still I would have bought a bunch of those and an SVT-PRO preamp.

There is failure redundancy in 4 power amps. If one pukes I only lose 1/4 of the poop.

I will also be able to tweak the tone on each of the amps if need be.

It's sort of distributed processing. BOB

no i meant 2 Power amps such as the crowns that i mentioned and with the svp pro you have the peg sound in a sub ninety pound package

I heard what you said, here's the deal with a repeat and maybe more detail.

And I said yeah and I could have gone with something like a pair of SVT8PRO's too, or the 5000 series Q's and have 5000 Watts in one amp.

But as I said in my answer to you.

I already had experience with the 4 and owned one.

I wanted to stay with AMPEG through out the system.

If I was going to use a single preamp and separate power amps I would have bought SVP-1600's but they discontinued them. The SVP-1600 is the power amp section of the 4PRO the SVP-PRO is the preamp section. Right now I am getting the same thing jumpering across the preamp to all 4 amps. When MY Radial JD-7 arrives I will be going in the front.

There is redundancy in 4 different power amps. If one fails during a gig I lose 1/4 of my power instead of ALL or 1/2 with say a pair of crowns.

I can also tweak the tones on each amp if need be because of the way I will be driving them.

Weight is not a concern as when this thing has 8 150# cabs, a 350# head that rolls on casters too is nothing.

Within reason money is not a concern, I figured I had maybe a $20K budget to build the whole deal, so far I'm ahead of the game.

I want a setup that is capabile of shaking the earth and is rock solid and redundant. I suppose if I started from dead scratch 4 - 5000 series Q's would be just slightly more dollars than all the 4PRO's. They'd have a lot more power, but then not AMPEG. There's that loyalty thing again.

I hope that answered your question, I realize its sort of a repeat. But the decision was a logic process. BOB

So. When this ROD is complete with eight 810's, what exactly is the plan for transporting it to a gig? I can see four 810s in a cargo van, but eight? You gonna have to rent a Uhaul for every gig?

I'm in love with those Electric Amps, I so very much want a Master Volume Unit but I honestly can't afford a new one, or the wait . So I keep waiting to find one come up used (which seems impossible, or only when I don't have the cash) so I think I may go with an Orange. Those Emperor cabs are so wonderful, I've only heard the bass stuff with Russian Circles live but have heard their guitar stuf many times live in various bands. I'm thinking of getting two virticle 212's. I imagine that'd be so yummy, or a berg NV 610. I live not to far from Chicago, maybe I could contact them to come try out some of their cabs? You think they'd do that?

Big Mac looks good. Just what I expected it to look like... If you decide to rack up the gear make sure to have a rack done that gives you a lot of side clearance. Most racks are way too tight for those pieces. BOB
