Yes, I know he didn't play the string bass, he played the hell out of tuba and Bari sax, and was my hero back when I was a kid playing a tuba as big as me. Years later, I was at a party in upper Manhattan, started talking to him without recognizing him or catching his name. When he said he'd been in the Saturday night live band, I said "you must know Howard Johnson." He says, "Know him? - I AM Howard Johnson!" I was embarrassed, but had a very nice conversation.
