Man, this one hurts.

EDIT: I have a very close friend who shared a rental house with John back when he was a mailman in Chicago and was working on many of the songs that ultimately comprised his first album. She and John remained lifelong friends and in late '97, without my knowledge, she gave him a tape of some fingerstyle steel-string guitar pieces I had composed and asked him to listen to them. John purportedly really liked the tunes*, offered me a great deal of encouragement, and even he invited us to come spend a couple of days with him to work on some of the material. Unfortunately, I never got to spend the time with him because the cancer in his neck was diagnosed just before we were scheduled to go stay with him. Nonetheless, his generosity and willingness to be so supportive and offer assistance to an absolute nobody spoke volumes about him. I had been a huge admirer of his songwriting for years, but that endeared him to me as a human being. The immense talent aside, he was definitely one of the good one's. I am truly saddened by his passing...

*My friend was a VERY attractive lady with a magnetic personality and significant major label connections, so I do recognize that Prine might have just really liked her, as opposed to thinking much of my music, but let me cling to the fantasy that he wasn't just humoring her! ;)

I agree. Felt a piece of my heart got ripped out when I heard. I bought his first album on vinyl when it came out way back when. Can still play most of it on guitar and I remember lots of the lyrics. When we pull out guitars on the back deck, I almost always play "Far From Me", "Paradise", and "Spanish Pipedream". Only saw him live once at Ontario Place and it's etched in my mind. It's hard to believe he was ever this young. Aw, cripes! :crying:
