Very comforting to know that he has now become one with that cosmic symphony.

Maybe we'll all start to play a little better now.

Rats! Phil was the first player to inform me that you could play off the root. I’m not a talented or great bassist, but a huge influence nonetheless.

I saw him in Portland and I dont think he played a root note on the one the entire night. It was a master class

There are lots, I like these off-the-top off of my head, There are other things as well. Someone will add to it I’m sure.

Sure. I think the jams here are a great example of the counterpoint and dancing around the root and rhythm that Phil was known for. Lots of other examples from this concert (I was there, BTW)

Phil somehow keeps the groove while not playing straight, if someone doesn’t play bass it is hard for them to understand why it is so different from typical bass playing and why ot made the Dead sound so different. I read a quote that without Phil the Dead would have just been the Jerry Garcia Band.
