RIP Ryan Dunn

Yep, I know about those but when you start getting into the 750 hp engines, you don't see many front engine designs.

Engine placement has nothing to do with horsepower output. Not to mention that horsepower isn't everything in the equation...
That list must be older, too, as the Corvette ZR1 should likely be on it. It'll beat everything in 0-60 times (3.3s) after the top 5, and would be in 10th based on top speed (205mph). Not to mention it's only $110,000.

Please note that I said "somewhere in front of the rear wheels".

I didn't say it had to be front engined.

Also,...in a 911,...it's not just in the back,...it's hanging out over the rear wheels. At least on a Boxter; Porsche figured it out.

I'm sure the 911 is a wonderful machine to drive but I'm willing to bet that if Dunn drank a bottle of vodka and got into an Escalade (a car more suited to people with more money than brains) he and his passenger probably would have survived.

Far be it for me to dictate what people can and can't drive but a 911 GT3 is essentially a road legal racecar and as such commands a lot more respect than Ryan Dunn showed it.

Yeah, somehow I read rear as front originally.

Can you even imagine the outrage there would be if Porsche moved the 911 engine to a mid position. There are still people crying about them being air-cooled. Not saying it wouldn't be better, but what fun would proper handling be?

Lulz.

I was having this conversation with Gard on FB.

I would love to own a Caterham Superlight. It would never see a street in it's entire lifetime,...but I really want to blitz around a twisty track in one of those.

There's plenty of high performance front engined vehicles out there. On the US side you have the Corvette, Camaro and Mustangs to name three quick and easy. World wide you have cars like Nissan's GT-R.

I wouldn't really call the Mustang or Camaro performance cars. I will give you the Corvette and the GT-R.

Yep, I always forget about the Corvette, it is such a little upsetter.

Like this? YouTube - ‪Caterham R300 Superlight on the Nurburgring Nordschleife‬‏

Even with the rear engine I think the 911 is just pure sex.

911 overtaken at the 3 minute mark. :D

The only problem with the Caterham on the Nurburgring is that it tops out too easily on the the long straights.

I like how I managed to derail this thread from the death of forgettable celebrity to essentially Top Gear commentary.

I guess you know more than the auto makers. :hmm:

The list specifically states that it's 2010-2011. Nothing old about it.

And I would like to see you beat any of those cars on that list. That Veyron would eat your $$$$ alive.

Well this thread took a different turn. Just like....nevermind :)

Well isn't that "ironic"?!? :ninja:

He never said it would beat a Veyron, just that it has faster acceleration to 60 than the last 5. I saw a video the other day where one beat a CCX in a 1/4 mile.

Who cares. I'm not trying to get in a pissing fight here but why the comment about how HP has nothing to do with where the engine is located? I never said it did and it kind of feels like that's what's being insinuated.

Maybe you can find some discrepancies with some of the cars on this list, but every one of has a rear located engine. If there had been one front engine I would not have posted. I don't think I need to answer anymore on this. In fact, why don't we get back to the OT?

The Mercedes McLaren SLR is front-mid mounted. It has a HP north of 700(I think) and has a top speed of 207, which if my math is correct is faster than the #10 car on that list, which comes in at 205.
