RIP Steve Albini

I'm older than him by a couple of years but only because I've been under the care of a cardiologist for the last 15-20 years. Get yourselves checked out, folks! You never know.
I'm 64 and just had my reg physical and all the lab work, cardio etc. My doc said they must have mixed up my results with a 30 year old. They had to stop me on the stress test cause I just kept going, and going...
IK, sounds like a humble brag, but I chalk it up to intense exercise, endurance type stuff (hardcore gravel cycling in my case), and diet. My diet is hearty but super clean. I also take absolutely no pharmaceuticals unless it's dire(most of them are poison). Haven't had so much as an aspirin in years. Very lucky of course. At any rate, while getting checked out is necessary so is front-loading your health.

Brag on, living healthy is a lot of work!

You won the genetic lottery. I have lived a reasonable life, generally vegetarian and always healthy diet, not super active like you, but not sedentary. However, I lost the genetic lottery. With an HDL that can't be coaxed over 30, even though the rest of my cholesterol numbers are reasonable, that ratio is terrible and I found out at the age of 45 that I had a calcium score in my right coronary artery of 99. I was told that unless I got it together, the likelihood of a major event in 10 years was over 80%. I watch my friends who weigh more than me, eat terribly, and drink like fishes manage to have better numbers and better cardiac health. Since then, I've also developed diabetes and all the other medical issues of my forebears. Intense exercise has helped you, but genetics are the prime predictor of these kinds of metabolic issues, so you also got a good genetic inheritance, which you could call luck. I've been on medication and exercise regularly, so I'm not in any danger of keeling over, but if I hadn't gotten checked out in my 40s, there's a good chance I wouldn't be here now. I make sure my situation is carefully monitored. With an 11 year old while I'm 63, I need to be around. Gigging keeps me young, too!

I can’t help but speculate on what Steve meant by "New fancy potato-shaped bass guitar: $1,000”
He might not have had something specific in mind, maybe more what we here would generically refer to as a coffee table bass. His choice of words sure makes it clear what he thinks of the indulgence, huh? That's kind of how he tended to express himself.

SUPER bummed about this. First album in 10 years coming out next week, I've been listening to Shellac in my car non stop in anticipation, was looking forward to a tour, and then this. So sad.

Was always hoping to get a chance to ask him who was responsible for discovering the Traynor TS-50B - him or Bob Weston. That sound has been the center and will continue to be the center of my bass tone for probably ever. He introduced me to a lot of bands either by being a fan of them or albums he's recorded.

His masterclass video at a music school in Australia is such a great interview and has my favorite story where he talks about how he doesn't interject in band's music because he doesn't know what his client's, or their fan's interests are. He goes on to talk about how Bush asked his opinion on album song order. He only did it because they asked. They all loved this one song - he hated it and kept it off the list. Well they put it on the album and it's their only #1 single.

RIP, Steve.
