Thanks Nicky.....I'm going with ebony for my bass, but I do think that Brazilian will be perfect on yours.
Ebony and cherry sounds like a good combo. The Brazilian rosewood really was the only choice for mine, but I was having trouble finding the right piece. I had given up and picked out a piece of Belizean rosewood from Hearne. A few days later, Hearne said that the piece I bought went missing. A few hours later, I found the Brazilian. I worked out well.

I honestly don't know. I haven't talked to him in a little while. I'm going up there in three weeks to pick out how I want the top to look. I'm sure I'll find something out then. I'm getting really antsy to have a Ristola in my hands again.
I'm really going on blind faith at this point with the cherry, although I'm going down to Jon Maghini's again soon (to have a ramp put on the 5 string acoustic bass I just go) and he'll have a newly finished 6 string with a cherry body there for me to try. Luckily if I find it's not what I was hoping then it won't be too late to change my mind for the Ristola. I've been so knocked out by the basses that Brian has done with Mahogany/myrtle bodies that I've been tempted to go that way, and I've always loved mahogany.....but the cherry should have a similar depth with more snap, that's what I'm hoping for.
Nicky, any news on the shape of your bass?
I went up to Brian's last week and we made some decisions wood wise for my bass. I'm just waiting for one more picture of a top wood choice and then I'll make my decision on that. It's going to be a beauty though....it's going to have a more understated elegence compared to the super tops that a lot of basses have these days.

Brian told me that he just got the template for my 33" scale/26 fret neck. I think he'll be putting the headstock overlay on the rough cut neck next.
As I just told Brian the other day, I'm really excited that all of the decisions that I needed to make are done...it's in his hands now. At this point I just keep playing music and wait for the call that it's done.
Cool. I saw that last time I was up there. I like it. I think it'll work visually once it's cut and shaped. I'm sure it'll be beautiful.
The top has been glued to the one piece body on my bass. I'm anxious but trying to stay cool about it. I'm very glad the bass is on it's way.
On another note, I got to play a bass recently by another builder that had a cherry body.....it confirmed what I thought would be the result of using that body wood. It was perfect....exactly what I'm looking for. I can't wait to hear it on my own bass. What I heard was a warm and punchy sound with just enough snap on top for clarity......I'm very excited indeed.

I had a few extra days off so I tried my Ristola through my Demeter/Crest amp setup, first through my Bergies, then my Aggies. I also compared it's tone to my P-Bass, Lull 5-string, and my Roscoe 6-string.

Andy. You must be extremely excited. That figured cherry top is gorgeous. The knobs look excellent too, the markers are perfect for the ACG I imagine.
I am very excited, thanks Erik. I've been dreaming up this solidbody bass for years now. We'll soon see if it works out the way I've imagined it to. The next will be the semi hollow bass that I want to get, and then eventually an even more acoustic sounding six. They'll all be very different but quite complementary. I'm looking forward to having such stellar instruments to play for the next part of my musical journey.
...exactly right on the knobs....I made sure to ask for markers knowing that I have the ACG preamp going into the bass. I left the decision as to what type of marker to use to David and I ended up with exactly what I had hoped he'd do. Very nice! I have to say, I think that I could get away with just going with a volume/balance/tone setup on this bass but the ACG is just so cool. We'll see if it's needed.

I also found out that I got a different preamp configuration than we expected so that needs to be ironed out....otherwise, it looks like it'll be ready to send to the finisher in 2 weeks...then the 6-8 week wait for it to come back, assembly, and it's done.....looks like July. This is really going to be an amazing instrument. I can't wait.
