Uncle,If you see and feel Ritters for yourself,every other luthier's works and brands look like just ORDINARY :cool:

Only one thing I wasn't satisfied with my Ritter Okon.

Jens used jumbo flet (probably Dunlop 6100???) on her but their top shape is not round but rather flat.
That causes less sustain and somewhat blunt tone in high position.
(If you play Loud Rock or Heavy Metal it may not matter but...)

So I brought to repair shop the other day and had them round on top.

After that,the sound became not only sharper in everywhere on fingerboard but looonger.Much easier to play too.I prefer very low action.

I don't know why Jens makes flet like that...
It shouldn't happen if its semi-order anyway though;)

Since we are approaching the two month anniversary for me and the one piece maple, I thought I'd give a quick update. My luthier had to do another set up on it about three weeks ago as it was still adjusting to the low humidity inherent in the Colorado climate - strings were high off the board, especially from the 12th fret on up. But, since the most recent once over, the bass has settled down nicely.

I'll say it again - Jens makes some of the nicest looking, AND PLAYING (caps for emphasis there, not trying to yell at anyone!) basses out there. The only thing that I find to be an issue is that the p/u's are "hot" - when I run any of his basses thru my Tascam BT for a little play along action, they clip at almost any volume setting. But, when played thru my Genz Benz rig (GBE 750 head,4x10 cabinet), they all sound fantastic.

I'll echo some of the other comments here and add - to my ears, Ritter = mid range presence with some thump for your rump!

The biggest problem that I have is that this plus the Shuderella are very distracting to play - you are looking at the bass more than you are playing it. The other cool thing about the one piece that when it arrived, it came straight from Johnathan Herrera, Bass Player reviewer, himself.

The Shuderella, it's an acquired taste, but I love it ;) A couple of friends of mine have played it and have said that it sounds more like an old 60's P Bass than a modern piece. Plus, the fretboard/neck looks like they are made out of plastic, but they are not. One of my friends took about 10 minutes just going over all of the lyrics that are on it.

Jens does fabulous work and is a stand up guy to deal with. We've got another bass in the works, but that won't be ready until late 2010 :)

I glanced over the review in Bass Player mag, but did not read it in depth. I'll see if that one's available online.

If you know of any other review, I'd love to see what an expert's opinion on it would be over some average joe hack like me :cool:

I found the BP review on line - I do agree with him regarding the tuning knobs and tone control, but I don't think it's as big of a deal as he makes it to be. In fact, I haven't changed the settings since I received it directly from BP and love the tone - I guess Jonathan Herrera (?) must have dialed in the tone for me :p

I'm not talking about the article, but the letter in this month's mag:

Here it is:

"The Ritter Roya concept bass is a blatant example of a luther who has talent but is lacking in artistic vision. $12000! Who need it? After finding a sold piece of maple, why screw with that funky inlay (and what the hell is that white stripe across the top bout?) You don't address this in your review. The blue pickups are simply wrong! this is like putting a couple of blue rivets into a Stickley table [a collectible high end furniture brand]. Just goes to show that some people are craftsman, but not artists. I'll take my Jazz bass any day. Don Klink by e-mail"

Few things regarding the letter:

- To each his own. I'm all for using whatever bass you like/can afford/fits the situation/sound you want. If the Jazz is where it's at - great. If four strings and a piece of plywood gets you off, then that's great also.
- That white stripe is a light reflection and the only thing that I can think of what he means by an inlay is the natural flamed maple!
- Until you actually see it in person, the blue p/u's and blue string just add to the charater of the bass. I personally think the bass would not be as unique unless it had those blue accents.
- I would also say that this bass actually pushes the bass/guitar design to a different direction. Risk, yes, but I admire Jens and other smaller bass crafters for their innovative look at the instrument. Will this particular look ever catch on/become one of the standards, probably not. But, I respect the chance taken.
- $12k for a bass - yeah, it's a bit much, but while some people collect cars/golf clubs/ex wives, I collect basses. My collection is more than just wall art, I love to play and I play often.

When I started playing 20 years ago, I did just fine with a Squire and Ibanez set up. Now, I can do something different. If I had to go back to a more "non boutique" set up, that would be OK - even that four strings and a piece of plywood set up would be fine, just as long as I'm groovin' and having a good time.

Yeah, I'm disappointed BP didn't correct him regarding the white stripe.

I was trying to work out the inlay comment ......still am!

I think one thing that 99.9% would agree on is the very high artistic content to Jens' basses, which clearly isn't to everyone's taste, nor would I expect it to be. I'm as big a fan as anyone of his basses yet there are still a few that I don't get!

When I first say your Royal. I didn't notice the blue p-ups at all - all part of the opposite complementary thingy explanation. Anyway I like your bass!

I agree with your comment - not all of Jens' pieces strike me (the Seal is one I just cannot get into). But, I love the uniqueness that is inherent with each one that he relases.

When Jens approached me about the Shuderella II (the one with all the funky handwriting on it), I was not 100% sure. But, once I actually saw it in person, I quickly changed my mind. The fact that it plays like a monster and sounds tight helps as well ;)

I'll take that four string Cora!!!!

I did have to tease Jens a bit about his new releases - he needs to make more four string basses! If I had the chops, I would have taken the six string off his hands also :p
