A bolt-on fretless Roya Concept? I thought a great part of the concept was neck through for the fretless version, and that Jens only made one fretted Concept as bolt-on (number 839).

It will probably sound a little different in a bolt-on version (think very very slightly more punch and less sustain).

There are no controls at all on the concepts - like Frizzle quotes Jens saying - but it's absolutely no problem. You could use a volume pedal, the controls on your amp or a tuner if you're worried about the bass making noise when you're not playing. It's definitely not humming :)

The bass sounds great and you have more control over the sound shape with your fingers than many other basses that have knobs to dial. I would definitely choose this one for studio work.

Thanks. I was hoping you would respond as owner of that amazing Roya Concept.
No controls sounds even better. I love passive basses but presumed that this would be to radical for most people, so in the back it would have some tone-shaping options.

Jens offers a bolt-on version of the Concept on his website. The reasons I would go for that are:
- The price difference is large, and this is the only way I could afford a Concept.
- I always prefered bolt-on basses compared to NT or glued options, so tonewise it could be a better bass for me.

At the moment I'n thinking about:
Concept fretless 4 bolt on
Carara white frosted finish
Makasar figured ebony neck to contrast nicely with the white finish
Gold hardware, and backplate

Maybe you Ritter owners have some nice extra ideas for this bass?

Seems like you misinterpreted that quote ;)
He didn't mean: "standard, there are no controls" or "None standard"
but
"There's no standard for the controls on the Concept. Everything is possible"

Arrrh, gotcha :)

In my opinion having no volume or sound shaping options is one of the things that makes the bass a true concept, to match the design. And why mess with perfect tone...?

On my Concept - as I guess on the other similar ones - there is only a small mid boost switch on the back plate, which changes the sound from warm, woody and organic to more modern, punchy and with added mwah. The rest is in the hands.
I've never heard another bass that sounded like this one, or which had a tone that I just couldn't imagine what I would want to change about.

But I can see that the price differences between the one piece body and the bolt-on is substantial, so if you know you prefer the bolt-on sound, I'll say go for it :)
I think the specs you have planned sound great, but if it was me, I would add some purple in there... Maybe an inlay in the fretboard, or some patterns on the body...?

I absolutely agree with the macassar ebony, it's one of my favorite woods as well. Are you going to have it epoxied like on that great looking Celinder you had? I also used to own a Celinder, although quite a different beast:

It sounded great, but it was HUGE ! Never found a gig bag that was big enough for it.

Regarding the position of the mid boost switch on my Concept, you can see it here:

Not insanely accessible, but then again I usually don't switch the setting during a song.

Thanks for the picture of the Concept. Is your Backplate made out of platimium, silver, or steel? Nice detail with the mid-boost.
I don't know if I would put a finish on the fretboard. I could make the whole bass to shiny, while without the Ebony stands out a bit more.

Those Celinders are amazing. I never could find a good Celinder 4 string fretless. The 5 string fretless was a bit to much for me.

Actually, the back plate is where I think Jens was in too much of a hurry - it's plastic. I may ask him to replace it someday, but it works just fine and I have no actual problem with it. It's just... well, plastic.

I'm in favor of no finish on your macassar fretboard - while the epoxy produces mad amounts of mwah, I feel it removes some of the warmth of the tone.
And ebony is plenty hard, unless you abuse it.
