Rituals before gigs and shows?

I always try to find a Second Cup coffee shop and have a large Caramel Coretto on the way to the show...I quit smoking so that is a ritual that I'm still adjusting to not taking part in...

+1 on the not smoking...I have not been smoking for 7 weeks now, and I'm taking it a show/rehearsal at a time. The first couple shows were the worst as I was a situational smoker, and shows were where I smoked the most. It's not been too bad since then, but I want a smoke at every show. I've been drinking a RedBull before every show, and of course a beer after I set up...

Other than that - tune and sound check.

get decently ripped b4 the show, chill and smoke(usually too many) cigs. I dont drink, so none of that. I usually take about 5 minutes to sit indian style and meditate to really get myself calm, then wash hands in hot water, tune, get levels straight and soundcheck, be sure of the setlist, and ROCK! LOL

we usually just show up with a list of tunes in no certain order, we usually use the same opener and closer and the rest is pretty situational, so before we try to get a rough idea of what we're gonna play. i play through my modes and scales to get loose and get them under my fingers. i also drink a coke before most shows, haha, not old enough for beer, and i'd rather have a coke anyway.

get slightly baked. after all these years, I still get a bit of stagefright everytime.

I hear this... I used to get wicked stage fright for many years. And I would down a couple of shots of either Jack Daniel's or Quervo Gold to settle my nerves before we went on. Now after 2 DWI/DUI's and the fact that I'm much older and wiser (lol), I still get a little ant-sy sometimes but I don't drink anymore. Now what I do to settle my stomach and get some carbs for energy, is (and I'm sure this may make some people queasy), eat a whole box of Kraft macaroni and cheese for my supper the nights that I have a gig. It works for me...Then later on (between the 2nd and 3rd sets) at the gig I'll try to get either an order of fries or some pizza for a snack. Then I'm good to go... Funny how things change...
)-(

Before we actually go on, I'll wash my hands in warm water, and do some finger stretching excersises. That eases the Arthur-Itis a little. Then I'll do about 5 minutes of major/minor scales. A little more of easy finger stretching and check my tuning and then I'm ready. Pretty much the same every night. )-(

I dont really have any rituals, but lately one of my bands gigs seem to start out like this:
I'll get a call from my front-man saying: "Hey man I know its only a couple days away but I booked us a really cool gig for this-coming Saturday night. I know we haven't rehearsed in a while, but were only playing one set and we'll kick-ass anyway dude".

(my reply)
"Who is this... Do I know you sir? (long uncomfortable dead silence) Oh yeah, I do seem to remember you now. Your one of those guys that used to come over to band practice, ain't-ya... OK I'll see ya at the gig man".

I then attempt to free my dust encrusted bass from its cobweb confines and manage to clean off enough to at least distinguish where the strings are. I then tune and spend an hour or so, over the next two or three days brushing up on our more challenging tunes. (I practice by playing along to live recordings of the band, but with the bass tracks muted/I've also made each band member their own personal custom made practice CD with they're own vocal/ instrument parts muted)

This particular band has been gigging together so long we kinda burned out on having regular rehearsals (besides for new songs) and actually seem to put on better shows playing with more energy, freshness and spontaneity using this rather bizarre method... (weird huh... ;) )

Usually bitch at the drummer for practicing very loudly before the gig begins (it drives me absolutely nuts when bandmates start practicing songs out of the setlist before a show, if you dont know it now then it is too late)

edit: oh yea, take a leak, tune and have a red bull and maybe a burger.

Not anymore, thankfully, but here's what I used to do:

- Set up my own rig, PA, & lights.
- Wait for guitard & singer to arrive, 5-10 minutes before 1st downbeat (just enough time for them to complain that something wasn't done "right" for them).

- Setup, Soundcheck.

The band gets in a circle before-hand, put our hands in the middle, we all say something positive about tonight's show, then the rhythm guitarist sings "little thang, lemme light your candle 'cause a-mama I'm sure hard to handle now, mess around"

Then we go play.

I, personally, always drink a redbull one hour before set time and take a shot of jager about 10 minutes before going on stage.
