RMI Basswitch IQ DI has landed

For those who want the details:

From 12 Volt onwards you have the guarantee of the full headroom being available all the time. With 9 Volt you are at the lower limit and you might loose some dB of headroom under certain circumstances.

Aléso if the power supply goes below 9 Volt because of non stable local voltage you might also have problems with the switching relays.

This being said I play the Basswitch on my small pedalboard with a 9 Volt power supply and have had no problems up to now.

Thank you Jacques! I switched to 12v now :) The pedal is great! As a doubler.. i cant live without it.
 
I've been playing without any effects for the last 20 years and I'm getting a headache trying solving noise issues...

I bought the basswitch for a Peter Gabriel Tribute project involving a pedalboard and the noisy Analogman Bicomp (it's the signature Tony Levin sound)).

On my main gig, 70's cover band, I use a DHA VT2 EQ-standard bass preamp that I love and would like to use with the BW!! (Link Removed).

I tried the Bicomp in the serial loop of the BW and the noise is just to much. I then took the line out of the BW into the comp and then into the DHA preamp (DI). It sounds great but I've got humm emanating from the parallel loop (5 true bypass pedals), noise that is amplified by the Bicomp to an uncomfortable level.

I did plug all the pedals direct into the comp and DHA preamp (no BW involved) with no notable noise (except from the Bicomp but at a much lower level)
So,
1) Could the parallel loop create noise from true bypass pedals (otherwise noiseless) ?
2) If so, would a noise gate be the solution? I could use it with the Bicomp in the serial loop.
3) Would it be possible to use the DHA preamp in the serial loop?

Hello Bellbass,

In the set-up you made you have at least 3 gain stages involved, not counting an eventual active bass preamp in your bass which is a lot and could explain your noise problems especially in combination with the OS circuit of the compressor. Here it seems important to keep the two very powerful gain stages of the basswitch (+15 dB each!) under control, try settings of VOL and Boost around 11 to 12 o'clock.

The hum issue points to a power supply problem. Do you use a power supply with galvanically isolated outputs?

Their should be no difference in noise wether the Compressor is in the serial loop or in the line out.

This seems to indicate that your gain settings on the basswitch are too high

So,
1) Could the parallel loop create noise from true bypass pedals (otherwise noiseless) ?

Definitely no, this type of problem usually results from a power supply issue

2) If so, would a noise gate be the solution? I could use it with the Bicomp in the serial loop.

I would try to tackle the problems first before adding one more pedal

3) Would it be possible to use the DHA preamp in the serial loop?

Yes, that is where it belongs in my opinion, together with the compressor

Thanks guys for the quick advices. Gillento, the boost is around noon, so I don't think the problem lies there. But I'll try to fiddle with the gain stage although I did not use the eq channel in my experiment...As far as the power supply is concerned, most of my pedal run through a T-rex Fulltank with galvanic isolated outputs but a few of them are run with another source which is not as full-proof. I'll do some tests and get back with results!! Thanks again!!
 
Well, in the late stages of developping the Basswitch, asked/preferred the serial loop AFTER the switchable parallel one. I, for one prefer my octave, filter and drive sounds in the paralell loop and I keep a compressor after those in the serial loop, to tame level spikes.
 
But what is the point. Imo the mix loop should clearly be after the serial. if not i dont see the point with having those two loops. Is it possible to modify this?

i have used the basswitch for a while, but im building a pedal board now..so i just fond out.
 
At least i want my comp (always on) first in the chain. And yes i think that my chorus, reverb should CLEARLY come after.

I would like to have it like this: filter octaver comp in the serial and the chorus reverb delay int the paralell.
That way i would be able to kick in my solo effects (chorus, reverb, delay) at the same time, with some added solo volume. I thought that was the whole point.

I hear you Gillento... but what is really the advantage off having it the other way around.
 
Sounds like the Basswitch is not ideal for your setup goals. Not every product is perfect for everyone!

The serial loop after the parallel loop makes the most sense to me based on how I might use a Basswitch (I don't own one) & it also makes sense for the strong majority of bass players I know. Most folks are going to have their verbs and delays last & not want parallel mixing since the pedals already do that. You don't usually want to further 'water down' those effects by mixing them out. Serial makes sense for most players. (Most, not every.)

There is no "right" or "wrong" way to do effects, but there are conventional applications that you see more often.

You could easily accomplish your goal with a myriad of pedals out there. Probably cheaper, too!
 
But isnt it common to have comp first and reverb etc last? If so what is the point of having on of switch for the "always on effects" ? Wouldnt it be more natural to have the always on effects in the serial and then be able to simultaniously turn your solo effects like chorus, delay , reverb on and off? Im sorry but i just dont get it.
I appraciate your answer scotch, but it would also be intersting to hear what other users do? pedal order etc..I would be suprised if i was the only one who would have liked to have the serial before mix.

I really like the pedal and as a doubler i use it a lot, but i didnt expect this. What do you think Jaques can modify my pedal on order to have it the way i want it?
 
Hello Odin,

When we developed the basswitch we obviously asked a lot of players about what they prefer and for this particular point 30% wanted the serial loop in front of the mix loop and 70 % behind the mix loop, so we put it behind the mix loop, especially as their arguments make sense.

The reason for the 70 % is that modern pedals a) have enough headroom and so do not need a "compressed signal" to perform correctly, that b) many players today use pedals that are dynamic sensitive and here an upfront compressor is contra productive and that c) most people today prefer a sum compressor and the volume pedal at the end of the chain.

As for your request of a custom model, this would a be horribly expensive and we are totally busy following up the demand for the basswitch and bringing our new products to the market (more at and after Namm on this subject).
