RNC "Really Nice Compressor" is nice!

Can you post the settings you were using when you heard the distortion? I'm most interested in the attack and release times.

It seems to happen to some degree at any attack setting, and at all but the longest release settings. Also, only on low notes: Low E and lower, particularly on neck pickup. The meter is so sensitive that you can actually set it up to an extreme to where you can *see* this oscillation/distortion on the gain reduction LED's.

Mark's going to look into this and get back to me. It may be that I bought a bad unit, or I'm having some other issue. I really want to be able to use this, because it does something very nice to the tone. It's a little like when I play guitar through my tube amp on the clean channel, but have it turned up just below where the power tubes are starting to clip...everything gets a little fatter and more harmonic, but the trebles roll off just a hair when you really lean into it.
 
I've used my RNC for a lot of things including bass, but I really haven't found this distortion thing to be a problem. One thing that comes to mind immediately is that it might not like the input level if you are running the bass right into it, or putting in line with effects. Try it in a effects loop, or on another type of insert and see if it still happens. Regardless, you should still be setting the input gain so that you don't get distortion there, then set your threshold and attack/release, then make up for the gain reduction with the make-up gain.

I am very familiar with both RNC's take on the "problem" and with the common opinions like the ones here in this thread. My comments are just based on my findings using it in my studio and occasionally in a live setup.

Just FYI, this latter part of the thread is talking about the RNLA, not the RNC. I've had good success with the RNC as well, particularly in supernice mode. However, the RNLA doesn't have that mode*, and actually my unit seems less tolerant of bass than the RNC is. Mark seems a little surprised by my findings, and I'm working with him on tracking down what the problem may be.


*You can emulate it by patching the in of the second channel to the out of the first, but unless you're a fan of the BIG SQUEEZE, you won't like it...
 
Interesting...active bass, or passive? Were you using an effects loop, or going straight in?

My Pedulla Rapture 5 has an active/passive switch.... not sure how I tested it. Given these devices are intended for line level, I generally use the effects loop. Somewhere I have read that the RNLA can be quirky at very low threshold settings, which might be an issue if you are plugging straight in.

Well, I was trying it both in the FX loop of my Demeter pre and straight in from the onboard Bartolini preamp. Same thing, just a change in threshold needed to get the artifacts.

Mark had me send him a recording of the issue, and is looking into it. It may just be that I bought a defective unit.

I wanted to give you an update on something. First off, FMR Audio's superb customer service. I bought a Really Nice Leveling Amp (RNLA) on approval, since I've used some older, vintage leveling amps for color on bass before. I definitely was pleased with the coloration the RNLA added...a different flavor than the RNC's Supernice mode. I also had a hunch that it would be a great compliment to the mwaahh of a fretless. I was right!

But then there was a similar distortion artifact that I'd experienced in some settings on the RNC. I contacted FMR Audio, and Mark McQuilken got right on it. He hadn't heard this with the RNLA, so I sent him some wav files with the distortion and without.

He tweaked some things, and sent me the unit to try out. Distortion is gone. There is now a VERY wide range of usable and useful settings for bass in the revised RNLA. You can go from subtle compression with little coloration and a slow attack to fast attack and release with complete squash, all without distortion even on a low B. The coloration is maybe slightly reduced relative to before, but it is still there enough to make me question my own ears about that difference.

As another example of Really Nice Customer Service (RNCS, trademark), Mark agreed to make the specifics of the mod available to this group. If you are handy with a PC board soldering iron, you can likely do this yourself. If not, or if you want to keep your factory warranty, you may be able to contact him directly and have him do the mod for you for a fee. No, the same mod does NOT apply to the RNC, but again…try the Supernice mode on that unit and you may be happy. Here is the RNLA mod as he described it to me:

**DA MOD**
Replace C6 and C7 with one each of (both C6 & C7 should be of the same value) a 0.1uF, 1206 capacitor. The cap could be either a ceramic or film type, but should have at least a 16WVDC rating. A couple of specific, suggested manufacturers and distributor part numbers:

* Capacitor, Panasonic, 0.1uF, 50V, Ceramic X7R, 1206, P/N: ECJ-3VB1H104K (available from Digikey, Digikey P/N: PCC104BCT-ND)

OR:

* Capacitor, Panasonic, 0.1uF, 16V, PPS film, 1210, P/N:ECH-U1C104GX5 (available from Digikey, Digikey P/N: PCF1189CT-ND

OR:

* Capacitor, Murata, 0.1uF, 50V, Ceramic X7R, 1206, P/N:GRM319R71H104KA01L (available from Mouser Electronics, Mouser P/N: 81-GRM426X104K50L

**ALTERNATIVELY**
If removing C6 & C7 makes you squeamish, you can "piggyback" the above replacements with the existing C6/C7. The existing C6/C7 are so much smaller (electrically) that the new value of 0.1uF will be the predominant value after piggybacking.”

So, once again I am really impressed that an already high-value company like FMR Audio is willing to go the extra mile to help out a relatively small subset of their end users. It is in our best interest to support any company that does this kind of thing, particularly when their products are so good and at such a fair price. (No, I am not affiliated with FMR Audio in any way).
 
Hey, OK, thanks for all that. I was about to revive this thread myself, because I picked up an RNLA and was having the same distortion problems (and then some more). I planned to contact FMR about it, but I needed to find time to record some clips first so they can hear what I'm hearing. I actually have been hearing a staticky crackle on the sustain of the notes, completely unlike the momentary clipping on the attack.

I'll do the suggested mods and see if that helps. :cool:
