Roasted Maple Necks?

Well, then it would be warped before it was turned into a bass neck, that must be a good thing. :) I don't think necks are roasted, but entire logs go into the oven.

Sounds cool to me, and judging by that ad, it looks cool, too!
 
Heat probably warps wood for two reasons- uneven heating, and drying out the moisture. If after heating it still has the same shape, then I guess drying out the moisture would keep it straigher than an unroasted neck.


Anyway I love the sound of "roasted Maple". Sounds ideal for BBQ or smoked meats.
 
Big manufacturers heat wood to speed the drying process anyway. Is this just a marketing gimmick and a little stain then?

No stain. There's at least one lumber supply company that's using a fairly exotic heating process to expose raw wood to considerably higher temperatures than a normal drying kiln, without burning it up.

The effect on the lumber goes considerably beyond simple moisture removal. Apparently, cooking the resins in the wood changes the physical properties such that it's a little harder, and more stable. It also darkens the colour in a way that mimics a good stain job.

I have a luthier friend (mainly acoustic guitars, not basses), and he's been experimenting with some roasted maple he picked up. It's way different than a stain job, in that the colour goes all the way through the wood.

Tonally, it seems to have a higher resonant frequency than an average piece of maple. It feels very resonant, and it machines like it's three or four clicks harder than untreated maple.

The jury is still out on stability until he's had more experience with it, but the piece he has looks promising- no lateral runout, etc. Of course, that will have a lot to do with the pieces they choose to put through the oven, as much as the heat treatment process.

This is the way I understand it also. I can't imagine that you would need a 'more stable neck' in, for example, a Sadowsky. Those necks are rock hard already. However, I believe Roger posted that he feels that option opens up other neck woods, like highly figured birdseye, that aren't (supposedly) as rigid as good old flat sawn, properly dried maple. However, now you are adding many hundreds of dollars to the price of the instrument.

IMO and IME, it all comes back to wood choice, proper drying, and good construction techniques. With that, my basses virtually never need neck adjustments, so I have zero interesting in this. However, with very thin or narrow necks and/or necks using exotic or highly figured wood, if this works as promised, might be pretty cool.

Of course, aesthetically, that dark 'burnt' look is pretty cool if that is worth the cash to you.

IMO there. Again, seems like a solution to a problem that, at least in well made instruments, doesn't really exist for the most part.
