I can agree on point 1, however I believe point 2 is the exact opposite of the truth.

I didn't say they were NOT cliched at all, just not overly so. I mean, every pop band is gonna have some cliches that they fall into. Its almost asking too much to have a pop band that is completely original. However, I do find some originality in Hayley's vocal melodies and phrasing that is refreshing IMO. There aren't too many out there that sound like her. But, there are a lot that wish they did.

In my opinion, The Pretenders (EARLY STUFF!!!) is some of the most killer, raw, rock going for it's time + Chrissie Hynde is an amazing singer!

I wouldn't say that Portishead is a rock band, per se, but since you mentioned them, I'll add my wife's band, Bitter:Sweet.
The Los Angeles Times said that Bitter:Sweet's first record was "the best of it's kind in 10 years since Portishead's DUMMY."
