Roger Waters has to be stupid

In my opinion Roger is a brilliant songwriter and a mediocre musician while Dave is a brilliant musician and a mediocre songwriter. They balanced each other out and produced amazing music until they fell out of balance. Happens all the time. Dave is an easy going bloke (and who I would pick for lunch) while Roger is much more demanding. They both have good and bad points as do all people.

Well said! I think this sums it all up very neatly, as well as answers the OP's question.

Roger fired Rick and then according to Nick he was next. Roger wanted to keep David around because of his talent but that did not happen and then the lawsuits started.

Momentary Lapse and Division Bell are pretty solid. It took me a long time to come around to them but in the end they are both great albums. I don't think I've ever listened to any of Roger's solo stuff because David and Rick are the Pink Floyd sound.

Roger Waters is not a "mediocre musician." He may be a mediocre singer. (I'm not saying he is, he MAY be) He may be a mediocre bass player. (I'm not saying he is...) but a brilliant songwriter IS a brilliant musician, because writing songs is a huge part of the musical process. Not just writing good lyrics. He's a brilliant arranger, composer and lyricist, and he seems to understand how all the parts fit together. Plus, he played bass live from the sixties on, and may have had a cringe-worthy performance that got caught on tape, but he delivered the goods a lot more than he didn't.

As for his vocals, I LIKE THEM. He has that "insane emotional edge" in his voice that most Floyd cover bands miss. It's a lot easier to sing Dave's parts than it is to sing Roger's. I know, as I have done both many times.

I should have used the word average instead of mediocre. I also really like Roger's singing. I disagree that a brilliant songwriter is automatically a brilliant musician. I have known songwriters that would sing the parts to the musicians because they could not play an instrument (other than their voice). Prince was definitely both a brilliant songwriter and a brilliant musician.

My point on Pink Floyd is more that the whole was much better than the individual pieces.

Why on earth would anybody want to quit working with David Gilmour?
Dave is a great guitar player, and a great singer ...
Have you been living under a rock for the last 30 years? That war is 30 years old almost. They've reconciled and these days they both have their majority of their good work far behind them. They're both too old, to keep flogging that dead horse. Waters got ousted, it wasn't him. He aimed to take over Floyd as his backing band for his solo acts. Later on when he gathered up a touring band for "Pros and cons and hitchiking" he hired stellar musicians, including Eric Clapton, as a hired gun no less.

Now, during stage/tour rehearsal, with all these expensive musicians upon stage, Rog interrupted the band to a halt, in the middle of a long tune, to tell the lightning engineers to "no, we should've more bright orange light here..." and Clapton just snapped and told him "hey can't we just play the goddam thing, you can do that lightning thing afterwards to a tape or something, stop wasting our time!"... and a thick silence laid itself over the musicians who got embarrased. Rog wasn't very professional you know. But he complied and just had to listen, to being bashed and lectured up by Eric, and IMHO, my stance is that I'll side with Clapton in this case. The tour carried on, but wasnt the jolly trip it might had been.

BTW Roger is adamant for people to play note-for-note of the studio recordings, not even allowing improvisations during guitar solos. Why he hired Jeff Beck for "Amused To Death" beats me then, because that man can't never play the same thing twice even if you threatened him with a gun.

That's why messrs David Gilmour, Mason, Wright (ok he'd split long before) did quit working with Rog. Not the other way around. Rick Wright had to tune Rogs bass on stage before the invention of tuners. So there. Period.

I think it's just like that when all bands becomes too big, and earned a certain amount of dough. Someone in the band wants to take over, and be the main songwriter/leader. All of PF members went mental after the sales of "Dark Side" , every rock bands dream sales, and went totally megalomaniac on all things. They wanted to do the "THE WALL" film and album and tour at the same time. They all wanted to be the men in charge, and wanted to run things ... their way.

Actually, even if I know those aspects of life called politics and religion are not well seen here on the forum, I do agree with him on many of his points against the Israel Government and their treatment of the Palestinian people, but just because I agree with him on that one point doesn't mean it makes me think of him as any less of a self-absorbed jerk.

Either way, regardless of where you come down on that issue, or what you do or don't know, it's a TB "no politics" rules violation broaching such topics. Might want to edit your post before a mod does. ;)

Ever seen a guy dump a hot girlfriend? Why would anybody want to dump such a hot Girlfriend?

The answer is simple - once you get over the hotness, sometimes you are left with a woman you simply can't get along with. And you WILL get over the hotness.

Good guitar players are a dime a dozen. If you don't mesh with one at other levels, you need to move on. There is a lot of water under the bridge with Waters and Gilmour. It's kinda similar to the peter Gabriel and Genesis thing. I like them all, but I understand how people - especially peers - can get on each other's nerves.

Didn't expect this much Roger hate on a bass forum. I've always liked Dave a bit better but they're both brilliant. They're both also probably dicks.

Not sure I agree. A lot of great songs only turn out great because of the musicianship of the people playing around the song. i def don't think Pink Floyd would have been as successful if it wasn't for the genious of David Gilmour.

I do get where you're coming from though. you can't be a great songwriter without an understanding of melody, phrasing, etc.
I just see songwriting as an art form on its own. Not all great musicians are songwriters. Not all great songwriters are overall great musicians.

I refuse to play the "who's the greater villain?" game. I do know this. They were both better together than apart.

Personally, I know which one I would rather have lunch with.

Mugre
That sums up my feelings about it as well.

And for me it would be Gilmour. Roger and I would try to kill each other.

^^This

Every time I see someone dis musicians that don't write their own stuff I see them as disrespecting most of the paid musicians on the planet in various bands and orchestras.

It's like saying you are only a great race car driver if you design and build your own car.

the only people qualified to bash Waters (or Gilmore) for their music are those who've written and recorded an album that sold more than 45 million copies and stayed on the Billboard chart for 741 consecutive weeks.

Anyone?

Anyone who paid money to see either live has sufficient standing to critique their live acts, IMHO.

Well, there you go. I like Dave but vastly prefer Waters' thing.

Seriously, Run Like Hell, the final song Gilmour/Floyd played @ Madison Wisconsin's Camp Randall Stadium in 1988 remains to this day the most incredible five minutes of sound and light I've ever witnessed, and I used to go to several concerts a month in my younger days.
