Ron Wood - As Bassist

You can hear him all through their catalog, but for me the most accomplished 'doubler' ? The late Walter Becker.

Amazingly good with a bass or a guitar, and a casual stroll through the Steely Dan catalog with an eye to the credits is VERY impressive. Think not? See if you can pick out by ear when it's him, instead of any of the top-shelf bassists they used on a lot of their work. I bet you'll miss more than a few. Not easy to fit in a bass chair at times occupied by Anthony Jackson, Will Lee, Abraham Laboriel, Chuck Rainey, and more.

Not often you see a credit worded 'Bass/Guitars' as on most of the tracks on TWO AGAINST NATURE. We miss him.

Ritchie Blackmore is a good guitarist-as-bassist, too. Apparently a lot of Rainbow songs attributed to others, including Bob Daisly, are actually Blackmore. There are interviews with Daisly saying that he only joined the band after those tracks were already recorded by Ritchie Blackmore. It's supposedly actually Blackmore on "Gates of Babylon"

Almost. Gates of Babylon, Kill The King, and Sensitive To Light were Daisley. Blackmore played the rest and did a great job.

Yeah, I've heard those songs attributed to both of them, in different liner notes and credits. But, I'm going with a video interview I saw, where Daisley actually says, he joined the band after Blackmore had recorded them. So, I don't know, but I would assume he does.

I'm going by what Daisley said in his autobiography. He kept pretty meticulous journals of what he played on, what instrument he used, amp, etc...

Maybe he replaced the tracks Blackmore had already done demo versions of. I'll try to look up that video, and see if it sheds any more light on the subject. I suppose he could have meant he didn't write the part, but he played on the track. Either way, I love Bob Daisley.

I'm a little late to this party but looking on credits : Electric Lady Land credits Hendrix as bassist on those tracks .

We got off track but if Spanish Boots doesn't exemplify Ron Wood as a great bass player?

Right, that is what I stated and cited…Hendrix played bass on those tracks. The conversation had veered off to mentioning other guitarists turned bassists, and I just added to that. As far as the Beck/Wood stuff, yeah, "Spanish Boots" rocks, I love that kind of roundwound grind, but Wood's work on the first album is exemplary as well. As his earlier bands were never heard in the US, it took me a while before I realized he was primarily a guitarist.
