Roscoe basses

I asked Keith about the angled PU's. His reason....for looks! He thought it looked cool. he has not done extensive studies on how the sound is sculpted going from straight to angled. I inquired about all that. I figured it would be to pick up more of the upper harmonics of the strings closer to the bridge. Keith said that sounds good, but not a consideration.

Kevin,
I was having that issue on my fretless but when I changed the strings from nickels to tapewound it almost reversed the effect as I felt I lost a little at the low end (B&E Strings). Which was okay as Roscoe's are already so bottom end heavy. The higher range strings performed/sounded much better with the tapes. Have you tried different strings? As for pick up orientation, Keith told me he has the LG pick ups modified so the magnets end up in the same location under the strings as the SKB style. If you were to use LG PU's in an SKB, or vice versa you would lose performance. I've never done it, but that's what the man said.

Well, it has been about 2 years since I last talked with him, so it was at least that long ago. You might wanna call him on that one? I can't remember exactly if he did mod them, or was thinking of doing it. I'm pretty sure he did, but I don't want to mislead anybody here that has an LG. Back when I was bringing my Roscoe's onboard I talked with him quite a bit about a LOT of stuff.

Can you play all kinds of music with a Roscoe?
I mean, can use the same bass for acoustic jazz, funk, pop and salsa? These styles are so different and require totally different bass sounds.
I know Roscoe basses sound great but I am not sure about the versatilty of the sounds you can get.
Can you guys comment about your experiences playing different kinds of music with just one Roscoe bass.
Please only objective and unbiased comments. (if you are a Roscoe dealer please do not comment)
thanks

I currently own 2 Roscoes, 1 LG-3005 fretted and 1 SKB-3005 fretless. I gig only at church and various youth events but have to cover every style of music you can imagine. We play country, jazz, big band, funk, pop and rock. With the 3-band Bart pre installed in both my basses, I never have to adj. the amp at all. If there's a sound in my head, it can be obtained by tweaking the knobs on the Roscoe's pre-amp.
As for Brad's comment "I could also gig with an LG", I've never been able to discern a difference between an SKB and LG when equiped with the same wood combinations, pre-amp/PU's and strings.
Did I mention that Roscoes play
s-o-o-o-o good?:bassist:

Sure, you can do anything with a Roscoe. Like we were discussing earlier, the EQ is a little different on that Bartolini preamp, on mine I dial back both the bass and the treble if I want something normal sounding through a solid state amp, and crank one or the other back up for specific needs. Also with a tube amp I just let 'er rip, my LG-3005 sounds like it was made for an SVT (or in my case a Fender 300 PS). For the tamer jazzier sounds I dial back, for the more aggressive stuff I open up a little. The EQ is very versatile, there's just a little learning curve in getting used to it.

you know, caplito, your phobia of dealers concerns me...;) - how long have you felt this way, and tell me about your childhood ( just kidding!)
since i have been basically banned from offering a reply, i will now unsubscribe from this thread, but i must say to you that there are a few Roscoe dealers here and we're not all about taking your money- we have seen many Roscoes and have heard the different preamps offered and been able to compare them side by side with other hi end basses and i know we could offer advice and feedback on these instruments, but somehow you don't want to hear that from the people who may be best qualified to offer advice and opinions- that's cool
as for all the TB members that ARE Roscoe dealers, as far a i know everyone is reputable and sincere - but heck, all we want is your cash - if i wasn't so at peace with myself, i might be offended by your request that I don't comment, but hey, i guess i just did!! sorry! good luck in your quest, bro!! - peace and out- Adrian

So far there's been a difference with every one I've tried... even as recently as a couple of days ago. The SKB-3006 had a very full yet clear sound set flat, the LG-3005 was thicker sounding which worked well fingerstyle but I didn't really like the slap sound. I'm still waiting to find the exception to the rule, so far SKBs have sounded like SKBs and LGs have sounded like LGs.

Brad,
I recently set-up a freinds new SKB 3005 and with a fresh set of D'Addario strings we A/B'd them and we honestly couldn't distinguish a notable difference. And his SKB even had a maple FB verses my LG which has a Purpleheart FB.
Maybe it's the humidity in Georgia!:D

As a consumer and not a dealer, I second what Adrian has to say. The dealers that come to Talkbass have been very knowledgeable and helpful. Yes, they want you to buy from them, but I've always seen pretty objective posts from the dealers.

I know that some of the dealers have post helpfull comments, but my question this time was for the PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS, not the bass sellers. Why is this so hard to understand? I wanted to hear from people that make a living from playing the bass (not selling them). Very simple.

Capalito,
I understand your point totally...if you're a gigging bass player, you want to know what other gigging bass players think (objectively) about the tools of the trade. However, myself included, some dealers are also active, gigging musicians. In fact, some of us are multi-instrumentalists and play different instruments in different bands. At the risk of paraphrazing others who have commented already, I think the message that they're trying to communicate is that being a Roscoe dealer and being an objective, gigging musician with objective opinions as a bass player are not necessarily mutually exclusive. ;) Good luck with your research on Roscoe basses...they're amazing instruments! :D

Here's one of the posting rules from AudioAsylum.com (a hi-fi forum):

"A member of the trade may not volunteer any information about a specific product that he is selling or making, in response to a general request for information about a type of product or in any other discussion."

Perhaps this should be observed here also. Adrian and Gard, and the rest of the dealers are all good guys with great reputations, but they also promote their business here on TalkBass, and I don't believe this should be allowed.

Dan- must you insult me this way??:D
hey, guy, I dont want to derail the thread here, i said my peace, thnks to those who had kind words. Yes, i play the basses for a living and for the record , would never sell a bass i would KNOW was the wrong bass for someone- not every bass is right for everyone.
But capalito, your request did sound a little like you had a bit of a chip on your shoulder.. but hey, here i have to apologize again because i said i would not comment on this thread again! ok, just to say thanks to Dan and Bassmanbob.. see ya fellas!!:bassist:
