Roscoe basses

Based on everyone's high recomendation of Roscoe basses I just bought a used fretless. I should have it hopefully by Wend or Thursday
Man I can't wait.
It's a LG3000
Maghogany core
flame maple amber top
diamond wood fretboard

Here's a pic:

That looks amazing! I really like that top.

I've just gotta say that I tried a four string Roscoe LG at Guitar Center a few months ago, and while I liked it a lot, I didn't think it had the same kind of sound that you people have been describing at all. The concensus I'm getting from everyone is this:

"P bass on steriods, big fat fingerstyle sound, kind of nice slap sound but diferent, overall better for fingerstyle than slap."

The bass I tried had a very clear, modern sound, with plenty of low end, but I wouldn't describe it as particularly huge sounding. I thought the bass was just incredible for slap. I'm one of those guys that never slaps at all, but I thought this Roscoe was just begging for it. To me, if anything, that's where it excelled.

The only thing I could accurately compare it to, was a Pedulla Thunderbolt that I had just played right before. I thought the Roscoe was a little more modern, and the Pedulla was actually fatter sounding, and had more low end.

Overall I was really impressed by the Roscoe, but I'm a little baffled by everyone's description of its sound. I'm definitely going to try another one when I get the chance.

I don't know what is up with the one you tried out, maybe the wood combination? I have owned two of the LG 3005's, one with the Spanish Cedar body/Afzelia Burl top, Madagasscar Ebony fingerboard and the other, Swamp Ash body/Buckeye Burl top, Birdseye Maple fingerboard, with both of them having Bart. p/u with Bart. 3-band preamp.

The one with the Spanish Cedar/Afzelia was very much the description everyone makes, P Bass on steriods, the Swamp Ash/Buckeye still has the P Bass tone but not as much lows and is a little brighter sounding with quicker attack. They are both still very close. The Ash body and the Maple fb contribute to the tone difference between them. All in all I will still have to agree with everyone else's description.

Try another one out if you get the chance.

I used to own two LG3000's, one fretless and one fretted. I loved the fretless to death and had to sell it when the economy got so lousy a year or so ago. But it was the finest fretless I've ever played (I'm hoping the Stambaugh that's arriving tomorrow meets or exceeds it, though). I have to be honest, the fretted one didn't speak to me the way the fretless one did. Exactly the same woods (maple tops and Honduran mahoghany bodies). Both four strings. Both even had similarly flamed tops. Only the finish colors were different. But while one was heaven, the other was OK but to me, nothing special. I've gone back to a Pedulla Rapture. I personally didn't think the slap sound was that great on the fretted LG3000, but based on the earlier Fender vs. other brands discussion, it really comes down to your tastes. Why the difference between my fretless and my fretted models? These are handmade basses, so I guess there are naturally going to be variances from one to the next. The pickups, in fact, were placed differently on the two basses.

I also played a four string Roscoe at a Guitar Center (Boston) and I didn't like it at all. It was an LG-3000. Not sure of the wood combonation. However, I just bought an SKB-3006 and it's unbelievable! It has a one piece figured myrtlewood body with a spalted purpleheart fingerboard. I couldn't want anything more from my bass. Not sure why that four string was so bad though.

Here's mine:

I'm going to modify it a bit by putting a Demeter preamp in it and adding a coil tap to get single coils out of the pickups. Should be really cool. I'm also going to have a ramp put between the pickups.

I got my bass from the Perfect Bass. Invalid Link Removed James at the Perfect Bass was so great to deal with. He was very patient and I never felt pressured. Great guy.

Can't wait to hear what you think of your fretless. I have some sound clips from Zon4John that he sent me of his fretless five. What a great sounding bass. Keith Roscoe once told me that he liked his fretted basses but he's really proud of his fretless basses. I can hear why. Enjoy! Let us know how it turns out.
