Greg used to really spec some killer Roscoes.
Can’t say that I remember where that one ended up.

So I've got Roscoe number 33 coming my way now (33 plus 3 of them I've owned 2x; actually a bit embarrassing but most were straight up trades to try different wood and electronics combos) and it occurred to me that I've gone full circle. The incoming bass is almost the exact configuration of a Roscoe that I started with 25 years ago. If I've learned anything from all the Roscoe's that I've owned it's been that what truly drew me to them in the first place was the warm, slightly compressed, BIG sound that they originally had. In the beginning you could only get a Roscoe with the Roscoe Bart soap bars and Bart 2 or 3 band preamp. And if you were around then you know that was all that Keith wanted install in them. I'm thinking it was because that was how he wanted his basses to sound. Of course I had to eventually try one in every combination of wood available to sample the slightly different flavors and then when Gard talked him into opening Pandora's Box and offering various preamps and pickups I had to try them too.
I suppose the saying "variety is the spice of life" is true but in the end we like what we like. For me, having just a single Roscoe now, it has to be a Roscoe with that warm, slightly compressed, BIG sound. IMO that's what put them on the map.

It was a bit similar to the one that I bought from Greg (Rocket Music) around the same time ....

So I finally got around to cleaning and setting up the "red debbil" last night and I got a bit of a surprise
Yep, it's only wired (and routed) for 9v. The battery cover is the same, so I wouldn't have guessed.
It's a really nice bass, great grain on the pau ferro 'board. Plays great too, I'm not having any issues with it so far (haven't had a 6er in awhile), but I haven't had it out of the house yet. Jerry did a great job picking the specs for this bass.

Hi all. I’m slowly turning into a P pickup convert. Has anyone dropped one of the Bartolini soapbar P’s in their Roscoe? What’s the verdict? Is there a big difference from the regular Bart soapbar front pickup? I don’t have the funds currently to just get a normal PJ configuration Roscoe so that option is out for now. I’d love to add a passive tone control but can make do with an LPF pedal. TIA.
I don’t know about all that, but I love my Roscoe P with a Honey Badger. It’s becoming my go to bass after years of my active Century 5 being #1
My guess would be yes, big difference than Bart SB in the neck position (basing that on a comparison between the Bart SB and P bass pick up on my former Roscoe PJ).
Even if you replaced the Roscoe Bart SB with a Bart P pickup in a P4 case, it probably isn’t positioned in the optimal location for a true P bass sound.
On the subject of the passive tone control, you can add that with a concentric pot (replacing your Current volume pot).
Thank you, I was brain dead and hadn’t even thought about the P placement. Nix that idea, lol. Looks like a PJ will have to be added to the wish list.
And it sounds like the concentric pot would mean I would have to find another way to do active/passive since my LG has a push/pull volume pot. So many options, so little time (and money).

I believe that Noll makes a concentric pot with a P/P function that will work. I installed one in one of my Roscoes. Worked great.

@staccatogrowl (Fritz) and I were talking the other day about some of the slightly darker pau ferro boards and that's a great example of it. Fritz also mentioned that Ken Smith basses used a lot of it but called it morado wood. I didn't realize that they were one in the same. I also looked it up and found this on the Ken Smith site:
Morado & Pau Ferro are trade names for the same wood.
Learn something everyday!
Yeah, Sadowsky uses morado a lot as well. This is my second bass with a pau ferro/morado fingerboard (first was a Spector) and I’m impressed with how bright and “un-rosewood” like it is. Not that rosewood is bad.View attachment 4444371
