Yeah, Sadowsky uses morado a lot as well. This is my second bass with a pau ferro/morado fingerboard (first was a Spector) and I’m impressed with how bright and “un-rosewood” like it is. Not that rosewood is bad.

Yeah. Pau Ferro is actually extremely hard wood. Probably more similar in hardness to ebony (which is the reason it’s being used a lot these days for fretless basses).
I suspect that Smith and Sadowsky use the term “morado” in lieu of Pau ferro because Pau ferro was originally introduced as a poor mans substitute for rosewood by Fender back in the day (in their less expensive basses).
Oh the marketing world!

So I finally got around to cleaning and setting up the "red debbil" last night and I got a bit of a surprise

Yep, it's only wired (and routed) for 9v. The battery cover is the same, so I wouldn't have guessed.

It's a really nice bass, great grain on the pau ferro 'board. Plays great too, I'm not having any issues with it so far (haven't had a 6er in awhile), but I haven't had it out of the house yet. Jerry did a great job picking the specs for this bass.

I believe that I now know why the “Red Devil” got a single battery compartment.
I suspect it was because the neck pickup was mounted above that area above (longer x6 style Bart).

I believe that I now know why the “Red Devil” got a single battery compartment.
I suspect it was because the neck pickup was mounted above that area above (longer x6 style Bart).

That’s some good thinking and detective work. Thanks! Like I said, sounds good so I ain’t complaining, just was a bit of a surprise. Hope Gard is doing well.

Since it was nice and sunny yesterday, I took some outdoor pics (instead of doing something like practicing ), I also noticed the headstock is translucent, not metallic and you can see some wood grain through it. Maybe it’s the maple top? Not a ton of figuring, but it’s a cap, not the three piece neck.



In some ways, this bass reminds me of the old Ibanez soundgear 6 strings that came out when I was in high school (i remember playing one at Guitar Center and just being in awe since guys like Anthony Jackson and John Patitucci played 6ers, and they were pretty rare), but it is definitely a high quality, handmade bass. The neck is pretty thin front to back, and pretty easy to play. I can reach the low b and not pull the notes sharp, so that’s good, but I doubt I could do a 7 (or more ).

So this showed up at my office today

Spent about an hour playing tonight and I’m absolutely loving it! The feel and playability of a Roscoe 5, the best low B in the business and tonal options that totally work for me. Drop dead gorgeous too.

Many of you already know this, but it must be said. Joe is a top notch individual!

I'm really digging the blonde LG-3005. It's exactly what I wanted. It's definitely got that warm and growly traditional Roscoe tone that won me over 25 years ago.
Always a pleasure dealing with a Roscoe brother!

Typically it begins at the original promised delivery date. And then it continues in a two week cycle indefinitely until the bass actually ships.

That has been a topic of discussion lately.
If I didn’t know that it was Pau Ferro/Morado I would have thought that it was Cocobolo though.

Jerry is a good friend of mine, and I remember that Bass being built. It is indeed a flame maple top

One more bit of trivia on your new to you 3006 Roscoe. The bass originally had a solid candy apple red headstock too. It developed a finish crack and Jerry brought it to our Middle Georgia GTG and Gard took it back to the factory to redo the headstock. Apparently they went with a translucent red the second time.

I went through comparing bridge material many years ago and have only used brass since. There's less high snap for sure, and more low mid focus, which is what I prefer on both ends. Makes quite a difference.

I installed a brass Hipshot on my Roscoe today. I’ve only played it a little but it did seem to change the mids a bit (in a good way).
I figure I love the tone of my Fodera and it has a brass bridge so why not give one a try.
it’s definitely heavier!

Not sure I could play on action that low. I like to dig a little too much. Never been one for a light touch.
