Roscoe Club

Trying the LG3000 again today at church. I know this should be my favorite bass, but I’m just not “bonding” with it.
I finally got around to replacing the Aguilar OBP-1 in my Mahogany / Maple top Century 5 with a Nordstrand 3B-4A. The pre sounds great with the Aguilar 5J-HC pickups and really gave the bass the gain, bark and growl that I felt was missing. Could work for you if you like the way the bass plays.

I do believe that I am in the market for a 6 string Roscoe. The big issue that I've had is that every 6 string bass I've played has felt like the neck is wider than an aircraft carrier deck. I'm never been one for knowing string spacing specs, I've always been a "that feels right" kind of guy.

So a super dumb question. My fretless feels a little tighter than my fretted. How does one measure string spacing exactly and what is "narrower than an aircraft carrier" for a 6 string bass?

Both the spacing at the bridge (center of string to center of the next string at the bridge) and the width of the nut will determine how wide the neck is and feels.

I have found that I am much more sensitive to the width at the nut rather than the bridge. YMMV.

If you measure the spacing from the outside of the C and B strings and then subtract half of the sum of the string diameters you will have string spacing at the bridge. Divide that by 5 and you will get string spacing in inches. There is an inches to mm converter on the internet.

For example: My Modulus Q6 measures 3.380 inches from the outside of the B to the outside of the C at the bridge. The B is .130" and the C is .032. The sum equals .162"....divided by 2 is .081". So we subtract .081" from 3.380" and get 3.299" We divide that by 5 (there are 5 spaces on a 6 string bass) and get .6598" which equals 16.75 mm.

Keep in mind that the Hipshot bridge used by Keith is adjustable for spacing so you can narrow up the spacing a bit on a Roscoe 6 with a Hipshot bridge.

Yep. That goes without saying. But what is wide and what isn't? What is "standard"?
There is no standard...it's what is comfortable is up to the individual. I experimented years ago trying different basses to find what was best for me. I like narrow on both ends of a 6 (16.5mm bridge and 2" at the nut). I suppose you could say wide would be 19mm at the bridge and 2 1/4" or more at the nut.

I have 3 six strings and two are the standard Roscoe 18.3(?)mm and the other is 19mm. I can definitely feel the difference on a 35” scale 6 string but it’s still doable, even with my (until tomorrow) carpal tunnel addled hands.

Well then, good luck on your carpal tunnel release surgery (right)?

So, our big tree in the back yard has a crack. We had a horticulturist look at it today. They said we may have to cut part of it down - hopefully not all - because of a crack in the trunk for safety. We thought is was a big ash tree. Turns out it’s box elder. I remeber Keith making some basses from box elder. IF we hve to cut some down, I thought, how cool to use it for a bass body. I suppose it would have to dry out for a while and all that. The tree is one of the reasons we bought the house. It shades most of the back yard.
 
19mm spacing on the LG 4 strings?

It is fairly easy to measure.

Measure string spacing outside to outside between E and G strings at the bridge.

Add the diameters of the E and G strings, divide it by 2 and subtract that from the measurement obtained above.

Divide the remainder by three and then use an inches to mm converter to see if it is 19mm or??

For example: My Century 5 measures 2.185" from the outside of the G to outside of the E at the bridge.

The E string is .100 and the G is .050 so added they are .150 and divided by 2=.075"

So 2.185"-.075"=2.11".

divided by 3 = .7033" converted to mm is 17.86mm.

So my bass shows tighter spacing than the 18.3mm we usually think of for Roscoe basses with standard spacing.
